There's nothing specific to capitalism that lifts up art, In fact it's quite the opposite. The only artists it really benefits are those making a specific kind of art that's already popular and easily marketable, those then fight for the top while all the rest get actively pushed down and snuffed out. I don't entirely agree with this. I think each socio-economic model helps and hinders art. It's a matter of picking the poison versus one being superior. The thing is, capitalism is the main driver for innovation and dynamism. Our quality of life has substantially improved over the last century because of it. Compared to other economic models, capitalism is most likely to encourage diversity of thought because the reward for innovation is so significant. Many of these innovations have also enabled art to flourish or be reborn. Take electronic and dance music as an example, the rise in computing technology due to market demand has enabled an entire genre to flourish and evolve. This in itself has enabled people to discover their artistic potential that they may not have connected with beforehand. The same applies with fashion too. You're right that the popular aspect art does carry an "appeal to the lowest common denominator" vibe, but I don't think it's arguably a bad thing. It does democratizes interest by allowing people to vote with something they value (money). Compare this to other models where the government or some party has to make the call on what's good. People in countries like North Korea and previously pre-capitalist China regularly try to smuggle western art and music because of its consumer-centric appeal. I think if we didn't have a capitalist model or elements of it, new art forms probably wouldn't be around yet. It just comes with a more competitive environment. I think purists tend to see art as a unique thing in itself, but in my real art is just a reflection of the society we live in.

Art and capitalism can be friends but a good friendship can’t be one sided… Do you think this sentiment will change when LG7 lands? I know everyone in here is hungry for more music, and it has been a minute since Chromatica dropped. Every discussion in this forum feels fraught these days because everyone is just waiting for the next era to begin… Which to be fair is how this forum always gets before a new era

That’s her whole brand, not just for Haus Labs, but for Gaga herself. That is the whole problem, she is involved in commercializing products without being creative, innovative and artsy in the slightest. The issue has less to do with "capitalism bad" and more in the way she goes about things, I can think of other artists who endorse certain products without coming across as a corporation. Conservative Mom 655
Maybe Gaga should go the Akon route, found a new record label, sign and market some artists to be commercially successful instead, you want Art? She gives you the Art. You know, like helping unseen talented artists take off their careers while growing her own business without new music released herself. Even though people are desperate for new Rihanna music at least Fenty beauty is creative, releasing countless films that feel like music video drops. The Haus Labs teasers and trailers got us shaking in our boots then it went downhill from there. People thought it would rival Jeffree Star’s packaging and imagery… instead we got another plain clinical and clean beauty brand with her name on it. Conservative Mom 655
so what's wrong with her words in her speech then? It seems some people disappointed here are because her business is not as creative and successful as TS, Beyonce or Rihanna's. Then she has to stick by her words and do better lol would y'all be genuinely happy if that Chinese asbestos business eventually became super creative and successful like the Rihanna one did and she never released a new album ever? It's ok to admit that she is not a better capitalist like TS, Beyonce or Rihanna at least for now, she's looking for some new ways to pitch herself that suit her the best. she may still be affected by being overworked and bankrupt in her prime years, she grew up upper middle class and I guess she didn't like that lol. Edonis 28,950
Yeah that quote is not doing her any favors. A lot of really confused and disappointed people out there lol. Don't be shocked where there's yet another round of backlash, regardless of her intent.

Tbh i think she is used to backlash regardless of intent. She probably doesn’t care anymore and I mean she’s human so she probably built herself up to filter out backlash.
