Seems like a waste of time Because it should be music i like, she works with a lot of artists I like, a lot of people with similar music taste to mine love her, etc etc etc But I just find everything she releases to be derivative and it feels kind of flat to me. I want to like it so bad! But something misses the mark. Also in my personal experience there is a lot of artists and music I came to love after giving them multiple chances. Just because something is not for you does not mean it is derivative. Who the heck sounds like this other than St Vincent these days? of all the ways to describe her sound, derivative is the last thing that comes into the mind of 99% of people Hey, I'm king of the world, you ought to hear my song, you come on measure me, I'm twenty inches long

All her influences. Idk, there is just something about her music where I don't hear her, I hear a mishmash of older artists (70s especially).

Of all artists to come after for being "derivative" you pick one of the least "derivative" artists alive today who never repeats herself and has a very unique guitar sound. But whatever, we are all entitled to our opinions I suppose. Like even this new track sounds very late 90s Bowie. Stuff like digital witness sounds sooo Talking Heads/David Byrne (who she worked with so makes sense! Perfectly suited collab!). I am not saying she is unoriginal, and I am not saying I need music to be completely original or uninfluenced to be enjoyable. I just think the influences "stand out" too much maybe and it distracts me from enjoying the music as her own work, like it just makes me want to listen to the music it reminds me of. It's also hard with guitar based music to not be derivative. But all the production added to her music doesn't help either. She gets coins from my streams and I even recommend her to other people, so don't worry.

I disagree abt the influences standing out as I actually think she’s exceptionally good at synthesizing seemingly disparate influences, but if it’s not for you that’s fine. I feel like characterizing her guitar work as derivative is especially bizarre to me, given that the way that she uses it is pretty unconventional. Can’t think of an artist who would plug a guitar into a synth pedal and play it like she does on Surgeon or an artist that would create something that feels so jarring and dissonant like the end of Rattlesnake, but to each their own. I personally don’t think that being able to pick out influences without them being a dead ringer for the other artist’s work qualifies as “derivative,” but, if it did, have I got some awful news for you about Gaga 🪦 We have forgotten our public MANNERS

But again, I don’t think hearing influences makes an artist derivative lol all music is based on *something* We have forgotten our public MANNERS

Idk like I literally try to listen to her discography and I want to like it, I'm just trying to put my finger on why. I wasn't singling out her guitar playing specifically, just saying a lot of guitar music ends up sounding very derivative. And I actually love when artists are very referential, again there is just something with St. Vincent that doesn't work for me! I wish I knew why, which is why I keep listening. PJ Harvey is good reference point too.

It can happen, I only know that this is not derivative and I’m hearing her, it’s her song and personality and narrative. And that’s it. Plus it’s so well produced , sang ecc this song is really good for me
4th Time Around 4,422
I love Masseduction and Daddy's Home, so this is not meant as a drag but Annie is just on another level when she relies on her own instincts without outside interference. This is the best single she has released since Birth in Reverse for a very obvious reason, Jack is gone which means that there is nobody trying to water down her sound and defang her.
