tylerjs 6,093 Posted February 22, 2024 Share Posted February 22, 2024 Didn’t notice anything but, story time: I live on a very small tropical island at the southernmost point in the continental US (actually closer to Cuba than the nearest major city by 120 miles, hola mi gente latino ) anyway nearly ALL of our wired communication infrastructure is buried deep under the ocean over 150 miles to get here to us. One day a couple years back a sailboat crashed and severed EVERY connection we had. No power, cable, cellular, landline, internet, nothing for hours. No 911 service anywhere on the island. It was actually so scary bc we didn’t even have a way of knowing what happened until people from the upper islands physically came down to ours to tell us. Our island is small, but our emergency services are luckily plentiful and trained for a lot of things so they systematically managed patrolling for emergency needs. But, it goes to show that NOTHING is possible without these connections anymore. We couldn’t even buy gas. Ladle Ghoulash 53,455 Posted February 22, 2024 Share Posted February 22, 2024 Certainly possible that it’s a cyber attack, but a lot of these networks lease hardware from each other, so a multi network outage could easily happen as the byproduct of either a failed Cisco update, a shared router issue, or construction teams accidentally cutting wiring (happened in Canada a few years back, if I’m not mistaken).
