Charli XCX was in talks with Interscope

Charli says unfollowing Rina Sawayama “was over a personal disagreement between friends” and that “it wasn’t even a falling out, we’re good”. She’s quick to say Rina never asked her to take sides. But she acknowledges “the masters conversation annoyed me and I told [Rina]”.

It’s common for record labels to own artists’ masters, which hold the copyright to original recordings of their music. But the subject has become the source of emotionally charged discussion among fanbases, perhaps because of Taylor Swift’s highly publicised dispute over the ownership of her first six albums.

When Charli signed a five-album deal with Atlantic aged 16, she owned about 15 per cent of her masters and the label owned the rest. “I’ve been in a position for a long period where I didn’t own a lot of the music that I made, so it’s hard for me to see that word [masters] being weaponised when it’s not the case,” she says of an ownership setup that is, by and large, standard industry practice.

With Crash she fulfilled her Atlantic deal after nearly 15 years and re-signed with the label. She talked to Interscope but realised more of her masters would be kept if she stayed with Atlantic. She’s emphatic that the decision to stay was “not in any way because I was backed into a corner to do so, or because I’m a victim. That [narrative] really bothers me.” The Swift debacle is “really unfair” but not representative of the situation faced by most artists, not least herself. “I don’t want people to be like ‘Oh my God, they trapped her because they own her masters.’ Like, yeah, they own my masters – that’s a ****ing record deal. That’s what they’re paying for.”

King of the Fall

Charli is that person who makes music so good that you ignore her messy attitude and pretentiousness. The vibe she gives off during interviews is insufferable and I am saying this as a big fan.

Something about Charli criticizing Rina for vocally wanting to own her masters (and, more specifically, not wanting them owned by a racist) ... REALLY rubs me the wrong way :samanthac: Gross

Yeah I'm not sure I'd be happy if I was her PR manager to see her going "A Japanese singer complaining her masters are owned by a guy who makes jokes about asians was annoying" in public.

Like girl. Read the room.

I don't disagree with Charli. I think it's about time we bring back bratty and pretentious attitudes. Everyone is too  too soft and cares too much about saying the wrong thing, and it's boring.

No, I don't think we're in short supply of assholes. If you want to be that person, by all means.

She has a point a record deal is set and clear for an artist when they sign it. Can they be predatory? Yes. Can a record label end up owning the masters to the artists music? YES. Thats why you read and negotiate your deal so it suits your best interests.

like Charlie said that is what the label is paying for… They make budgets for these artists and expect to own their masters and take the biggest percentage of their income. It can get annoying seeing artists whine about their record deals when they most likely knew exactly what they were getting into. They’re victims of their own choices…

The more general point about masters is kind of saliant, although considering the majority of people sign these record contracts when they are far too young to understand the legalities/can't afford a lawyer to represent their best interests in negotiations/have no ability to fight for a better deal it's essentially impossible for anyone other than established wealthy artists to get a deal that suits their best interests.

But her comments in relation to Rina's situation are tone deaf and amount to her essentially saying "when my friend got upset about racism, I took the racist's side".

Charli wasn't as far as I know, but she's really close with George (engaged) and Matty from The 1975 so I can understand how Rina would consider that betrayal from a friend cozying up to that riff raff.

She wasn't. She by her own account unfollowed Rina when Rina spoke out against Matty Healey part owning her masters after he made a podcast appearance where he made racist jokes about asians & black women. Charli by her own words found the conversation "annoying".
