In a way though, it is all sort of bitter sweet for me because I have been all in with him ever since House of Balloons and knowing that this will most likely be the last album he releases as The Weeknd is kinda sad. What’s the tea with him not releasing music under weeknd?? And what is this a trilogy to?

And what is this a trilogy to? Basically The Weeknd is a character that allows Abel to write songs from a certain point of view and it looks like he wants to start writing about new themes and is planning to retire the name by killing him off through the storyline of this current trilogy of albums and just start going by Abel Tesfaye, his career as The Weeknd started with a trilogy and it will end with a trilogy. This is not a decision he recently made but a plan long in the making which started during After Hours which was narratively about the Weeknd's downfall and spiral out of control. The follow up, Dawn FM was like a state of purgatory in which the character is an old man and reflecting on his past actions and wants to change for the better. Less Than Zero was the perfect main closing track for Dawn FM (not including Phantom Regret) because the character has finally become totally self aware and remorseful, only that way can you better yourself as a person. It sets things up perfectly for this next album because it feels like moving into the light. Tesfaye, meanwhile, was experiencing a kind of breakdown. His two characters do not look alike: The Weeknd wears sleek black suits, while Tedros has a rattail and usually sports shiny, ’70s-style half-unbuttoned shirts with aviator sunglasses. “I had to take off the Weeknd outfit, put on Tedros’s wig, shoot with Jocelyn, then go back to being The Weeknd,” he told me later. “It was tough to go from one head to another. Then, after the concert, I lost my voice. No voice came out at all. That’s never happened before. My theory is that I forgot how to sing because I was playing Tedros, a character who doesn’t know how to sing. I may be looking too deeply into this, but it was terrifying. As The Weeknd, I’ve never skipped a concert. I’ve performed with the flu. I’ll die on that stage. But there was something very complicated going on with my mind at that moment.” Tesfaye’s identity crisis was about more than juggling two characters in one night. “I’m going through a cathartic path right now,” he said. “It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.” https://www.wmagazine.com/culture/the-weeknd-lily-rose-depp-the-idol-hbo-interview Edited February 18, 2024 by hieronymus

Dawn FM was full of foreshadowing about what was coming in the future. It is obvious that The Weeknd as we knew it as a concept is going to be killed off after the next album, what is still unclear to me is if he will retire the stage name itself which is really iconic.
