In fact, the production on these songs reminds me a lot of Lemonade which I love.

AkariGaga 1,102
They live in the tortured music critics basement but they are not wrong completely. This is working class music for people who can afford a Lexus from a pop star with top ten carbon emmision rate. If she is reclaiming the genre and making a racial statement about it, should it sound like other country music out rn? There is a lot of complex, beautiful black country out under the radar btw. Bey just doesn't have the type of voice or presence to carry that feel imo and her attempt to do it anyway seems to be in an awkward direction in comparison. Which is what Pitchfork is also saying. EGOT2027 10,807
do they expect her to write songs about driving around town in a 5 car motorcade while writing million dollar checks for her nannies and coordinating jay-z’s philanthropic events?? no one would want to listen to that lol

Emvee 7,749
I honestly had no idea country music had black origins. I thought it originated from Appalachian music influenced primarily by Scottish immigrants
King of the Fall 3,811
Pitchfork still just as pretentious as always, I was not crazy about texas hold em but not for the ridiculous reasons that Pitchfork had issues with the track. Borislshere 52,689
I’m not feeling these new songs. Going from an album like renaissance to this is such a jarring 180. I don’t mind a country song or two on an album but a full country album? Feels really similar to when Joanne dropped. Hoping I’ll eventually come around to this new music as I did with Joanne. Maybe the tour will help. Edited February 13, 2024 by Borislshere
Gorehound 3,803
So what they're basically suggesting is that an artist with that extreme level of wealth and fame can't be authentic? In that case then all pop stars should just stop making music all together. It's so doomer. They forget that the music is for the people, regardless of who makes it. Art is made to be shared and enjoyed, and can be made and felt by anyone, way above its function to make money.
