Russia accuses Moldova of 'colonization' for renaming street named after Russian poet

The initiative regarding the renaming of Pushkin Street in Chisinau to Street Regina Maria a Romaniei represents a spit in the face of the people of the Republic of Moldova and a manifestation of colonialism, said the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Maria Zaharova, quoted by Ria Novosti.

Previously the leader of the Moldavian National Party, Dragoș Galbur, sent a petition to Chisinau City Hall regarding the renaming of Pușkin Street to Strada Regina Maria a Romaniei, amassing thousands of votes.

"What kind of democracy is this which abolishes the people's own language (author's note: in 2023 Moldova officially recognized Romanian as its official language) and names central streets after the representatives of the monarchical houses of other countries? (author's note: Romania and Moldova share the same Royal House)

This is not a democracy, it is colonialism," Zaharova emphasized.

Moldova is colonized by Russia anyways (indirectly). Moldova should be incorporated into Romania anyways (with autonomous zones for minorities and equal rights and stuff of course). Russia is really messing with Eastern Europe even to this day...this needs to end somehow

Sadly they wouldn't fail in Moldova. They currently have 6.5k professional army.

Ideologically, the groundwork for Russia's intervention in the Republic of Moldova has been laid off ever since the Republic of Moldova gained its independence.

The only thing preventing Russia from asserting its power over Bessarabia (which is another native name for the region) is its inability to do so. In other words, is not of question if Russia will want to conquer it, but if it has the concrete means to do it.  That being said, one need to understand that the situation in which Moldova is put today is not completely analogues to that of Ukraine, and Russia is coming from a different place when it comes to its imperialism in this country.

Namely, the Republic of Moldova was born out of lands Russia and the Soviet Union annexed from Romania.

Fearing the fact that they might secede from the Russian and Soviet imperial projects, Russia tried to impose a new Moldovan identity to the inhabitants of the region, as well as Russify the language and promoted a kinship between Moldovans and the East Slavs. Russia's hateful attitude towards Romania and Moldova stems in part from the fact that Romanians (which are a majority in both countries) are a Latin nation. Russia's historical desire was to create a pan-Slavic empire including Russians, as well Ukrainians, Belarusians, Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Bulgarians, Serbians etc - naturally, Romanians were perceived as an inconvenience because they are right in the middle. And it was Russia's goal to Russify some, if not all of them, in order to create a bridge toward Bulgarians/South Slavs.

Ever since the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia continued to intefer in the internal issues of the Republic of Moldova, in fact in the very days of its early independence, Russia instigated a war between the nascent Moldovan state which was making steps to merge with Romania and Transnistria, which resulted in

1) Transnistria's seccesion;

2) Russian occupation of Transnistria and

3) the anullment of Moldova's hopes to join Romania.

Transnistria itself is a can of worms because the Soviets took Moldova's coastline and northern lands and allowed Ukraine to annxed them, while the Republic of Moldova received tiny Transnistria as a compensation - a land which was historically at that point never fully a part of the Moldovan state. Note that during the Transnistrian war, Ukraine sided with Transnistria and not Moldova because it had territorial ambitions over the region.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Another territory in which Russia has significant influence, and which could be weaponized in a similar matter as Transnistria is Gagauzia, which is a province inhabited by Gagauzes (Turkic speakers who ditched the Gagauz language and were Russified during the time of the Sovet Union). In case of a new war with Transnistria backed by Russia, Russia will also assist Gagauzia in breaking away from the Republic of Moldova, and creating a Russian stronghold in and around Odesa to eventually occupy the entire country. 

What is Moldova's geopolitical role in all of this in 2024 and why Russia is so agressive?

Russia is agressive because it hates that the Republic of Moldova finally ditched pro-Russian politicians in favor of pro-Romanian and pro-EU ones like Maia Sandu, and fears that it will sooner or later fully lose its influence over the country. In the last years, Moldova started to replace Russian energy with Romanian energy, once again recognized Romanian as its official language, took steps to phase out Russian and the churches across the country are slowly but surely leaving the Russian Orthodox Church to join the Romanian Orthodox Church (which even prompted the local Bishop to write letter to Kiril which was leaked recently, and where he said the unification with Romania is underway ).

An unified Latin Romanian state in the middle of Slavic countries has been one of Russia's greatest nightmares, long before NATO existed, and Russia hates that it's slowly becoming a reality (the fact that Romania joined NATO in the meantime too makes the prospect of Romanian reunification even worse for Russia, but Transnistria proves that Russia's wars are not only about NATO, but also plain Russian imperialism).
