This quote was literally all we heard and saw for the first 4 or 5 years of Gaga's career from the GP so :huntyga: She literally swallowed rosary beads in Alejandro dressed as a nun with a upside down cross on her dress :huntyga: Can we really judge :huntyga:

True, but it’s also was 14 years ago. I’m actually surprised some still find shock value in Christian imagery at this point… It’s just sooooooo overdone

Gaga’s/ Madonna’s music is still talked about and Alejandro and Like A Prayer are classics. Nas’ music and imagery are shocking for the sake of shock value, no substance or longevity.

Gaga did it Brilliantly though, she did her research to make sure she made sense. Also, her work always came out visually stunning and it had artistic credibility.

Also I need to point out that despite what horror movies may have had us thinking, there is nothing connonically wrong with the upside down cross. Infact, biblically it is a sign of humility and this is what I mean by gaga actually doing her research.

Using Jesus and judas as a metaphor for a toxic love story is brilliant song writing that not even christians can deny because it is biblically accurate in a sense. The synergy is undeniable.

Also gaga never whined when she got the backlash. She embraced it because she knew what she was talking about. Her work still stands the test of time. Go and watch the montero music video and tell me how many times you cringed .

Ok here’s the thing. I’m not a Nas stan, don’t care for his music at all really, and I personally don’t connect with his artistry in any way.

That said, Gaga did the EXACT same things back in her day. Releasing Judas on Easter, tons of Christian imagery, pissing off every conservative group for the sake of doing so—but also in the name of art like Nas is trying to do. Her entire career is quite literally oozing religious imagery. Do I find it a little predictable and boring for him to do this now? Sure, but the shock value is working exactly how it was intended. Gaga was the QUEEN of shock value for many, many years and I’m a little confused as to how some people are faulting another artist for using it? She had artistic intent behind it of course, but sometimes it really was just for the grandeur and shock.

and on the accusations of being reductive, I’m no Madonna fan (by ANY means), but let’s not pretend like Gaga wasn’t incredibly influenced by her career. Madonna also used shock value, specifically in the religious vein, and while it did have its purpose it was also VERY much for its face value: pure shock and discord. Gaga followed in her footsteps in her own way, and Madonna fans were relentless in pointing out how much Gaga had pulled from Madonna’s career in terms of influence. It would really be a shame for yall to now be the ones casting judgement on a young artist doing what she did in her early career.

I think Nas seems like a nice guy and he has an artistic vision. Not one that I subscribe to or enjoy, but it’s there. And for him to follow in the footsteps of our Shock Value Queen and be attacked for it and called reductive is…reductive in itself. This is the same criticism that Gaga got for most of her career for using so much shock value and pulling inspiration from pop stars before her. Y’all really are sounding bitter? Again, I don’t care for Nas’ music or art in ANY way. Don’t care about him generally. But it’s really not fair for y’all to act like your faves haven’t been doing this for ages and you’ve been undoubtedly supportive of that. If you’re genuinely offended by his use of religious themes, you might as well pull TFM and BTW from your discographies while you’re ahead.

I mean just because you don't like it or find it interesting or clever doesn't mean that other people don't enjoy it, I like the Montero video 🤷🏻 Does it have to be deep? I think it's a fun theme for an album/single, it's not exactly common in the rap world to have this kind of imagery.

I feel like "back in her day" is the key phrase though. It wasn't original but controversy itself was iconic. At this point everyone is pretty desensitized to it. And it's really a crutch LNX relies on. Because his lyrics aren't that intricate and neither is his performance skill. He already did the biblical stuff with Call Me By Your Name. He faked a lawsuit for Industry Baby. He did the pregnancy announcement for his album. Gaga's music stands by itself and is popular 15 years later. But the same can't really be said for his music.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with referencing religion in art, but I personally felt this was too on the nose. I honestly found the artwork cringey. Still looking forward to new music though :vegas:

People ganging on him is crazy. It's fine to say that you dom't like the concept respectfully but it feels like people are throwing around words that he isn't.

Honestly, if people were that desensitised to religious imagery at this point they wouldn't be so triggered by Lil Nas's work, both CMBYN and now.

Oh I agree 100%, not arguing that at all. I’m just saying it’s disingenuous for Gaga fans to say it’s disrespectful to do it when she has so many times before and it’s been okay. I personally think it’s a tired gag at this point especially since he’s done it before, but the way some Gaga fans are implying it’s morally wrong or something is laughable lol
