You're acting like it's wild to say keeping him away from the highest position in the country would save democracy, but we're talking about the person who had plans to evoke the insurrection act to keep his position using the military after getting voted out and has said on camera more than once he wants to act like a dictator "for one day" if he gets re-elected. That would firmly shift us clearly out of a democracy.

The pessimist in me says they won’t do sh*t, but there are some interesting and subtle factors at play that allow for a dark horse chance. 
a) the Supreme Court loves to assert its power, and Trump’s dictator 2nd term might not bode well for them

b) Republican ultra rich dislike Trump and this is a potential way to definitively banish him

c) it’s the morally and constitutionally correct f*cking thing to do

To anyone who sincerely* thinks that "the voters should decide", I'd like to remind you exactly how Donald Trump came to prominence as a politician**: birtherism. That is, the attempt to disqualify Barack Obama from the office of President by claiming that he wasn't a natural-born citizen, as the Constitution requires. This claim was of course made without evidence, like most of what Trump says; but more to the point, as a Constitutional pre-requisite for the office, it's of exactly the same disqualifying nature as Trump's own insurrection -- only, that's obviously much worse, and in this case, easily proven, as he did it in front of everyone.

* I think most people who say this are arguing in bad faith, but I'll give some of them the benefit of the doubt.

** Obviously he was already famous, just not in that capacity (although he had played with the idea of running for President since at least 1987).

If you thought that birtherism was a valid, just cause, then you should apply the same kind of standard to Trump, and call for his disqualification.

But if you think "the voters should decide", then realize that Trump himself holds to no such principle, as he was more than eager to disqualify Obama on a technicality, and any noises he makes about "letting the voters decide" now are purely self-serving (again, as with almost everything he ever says). And really think about whether that's someone who deserves your support.

We don't live in a direct democracy therefore the government and chosen electors should pick our candidates and leaders

But also we live in a democracy therefore the government has no right to pick what candidates we can and can't vote for

We should let the voters decide if Trump should win

But also voters across the nation should have their voices nullified just because they were in the minority in their state

I say we compromise! Keep Trump on the ballot to ensure democracy exists and erase the electoral college to ensure ACTUAL democracy exists
