skaxboy 4,398
I think people just wait for it to get on a streaming service they already pay for. Five Nights at Freddy’s is a rare exception. It made $80 in its first weekend and was available on Peacock on the same date. I love the MCU but Ant-Man and The Marvels had such an opportunity to be amazing. They were just fair. Same goes for Love and Thunder. I enjoyed Wish but it had its little flaws here and there. I miss the evil villains with a big battle at the end. The Flash was trash. Blue Beetle was a C+/B- and is doing pretty good on Max. I love to go to a movie theater and watch with other people. Avengers: Endgame on opening night was incredible. Everyone was so hyped up and cheering. Movie tickets are pretty pricey and the concessions are so expensive. There are fancier theaters that serve you food but the food is fair at best. I wish there were a movie theater that had fast food like Panda Express or Chipotle inside of it and they delivered to your seat. I feel ripped off paying $8 for popcorn that isn’t fresh or $7 for off brand tortilla chips with a cup of cheese. They do it because they can and people with buy it regardless. Tyler1992 2,121
I think it will be a long time before Hollywood is “business as usual” at the box office. Covid, streaming, and strikes all have long term implications and run on effects at the theatres. It’s not to say film itself is at an all time low.

stateofgaga 49
Because everyone knows that the movie will eventually be on streaming so no point in rushing to see something mid Audience will show up for events like Barbie and Oppenheimer. I also think Wonka will surprise. I saw it this weekend and it's pretty amazing Edited December 11, 2023 by stateofgaga
Creyk 17,000
They are not making good movies anymore. I would be happy to go to the cinema if they showed anything worth seeing. In fact, sometimes I open up the showings for the weekend in the hopes of going with a friend, but then we don't find anything worthy. I mean, look at the movies we get: Superhero movies - boring Wonka - chalamet is a turn-off, no thanks The little mermaid - bad & uninteresting Napoleon - boring, stupid and disrespectful to historical facts Killers of the flower moon - boring, bad subject matter and way too long Mario - I actually saw this one but it was not that great. But ok I am not the target audience Barbie - it was okay but nothing to write home about Another indiana jones, mission impossible, hunger games, jurassic park movie - these franchises, concepts and ideas are all TIRED, old and boring. No thank you! Wish - I wanted to see this one but the universal reception said it sucks very hard so I did not So at the end of the day what are we left with? It is perfectly reasonable that cinemas are not making huge profits this year. We need stronger movies.
MelbHawker 6,583
I think it’s a mixture of streaming services & cost of living thrown in. I think Wonka will be a hit.
Edonis 28,622
As others pointed out - people are extremely selective about what they watch in theaters. I used to be a lot more open to checking out a film that interests me since I live quite close to a theater, but with the rising cost of living and questionable output by major studios, I'm a lot more picky. Emvee 7,633
Notice how none of the 3 movies you have on the poll are an original idea? Everything is either a remake or a sequel and that has really cheapened the movie going experience for me. Hollywood is not bringing anything good to the table anymore. Easy 5,243
Blockbusters are no longer about entertainment but statements. As a gay Asian person I would love representation in Hollywood movies but when all the movies nowadays are about whether they have enough skin colors or gay couples or people with dwarfism, these things draw the fun out of movies. Tbh i wasnt bothered by the disney and pixar stuff made 10 years ago which race and gender were not the focus, making these new ones with inclusion in mind is great, just dont put them before the storytelling. If a story works better without the Black gay couple and Asian friend, let it be! I think this is pissing half of America off and the global market especially Asia and China arent ready for such in your face propaganda. And a lot of these huge numbers before covid has huge part from these region.
Gaby15 9,266
- people have become much more individual with Covid, they are not interested/daunted by the crowd - people are lazy and cost-effective, why go to the cinema if after a few weeks or months it will be on the already subscribed streaming anyway (so it will be essentially free and in your home) - most of the films are boring sequels or remakes
