The soup can reference is about how Warhol used high art as a vehicle for consumerism and Gaga was saying that the goal of ARTPOP was to reverse that and use consumer/commercial culture as a vehicle for high art.

I produce music myself and whenever I recorded something that I perceived as „good“ (even just a concept) I immediately hyped myself and friends with the vision before my eyes like THIS IS THE ****. ITS GONNA BE THE LEAD AND THIS ONE WILL OPEN THE WAY ALBUM etc. Getting back to it a month later just to loathe what I was doing so I guess it’s kinda the same with her especially during pre ARTPOP days.

well.. DJWS came in as the head producer very late in the game, I believe Garibay was supposed to be the head producer but something went off at some point, he produced some songs, like Partynosaurus

eh DJWS was always part of it, to the extent that Gaga called him right after Born This Way was turned in so she could tell him the next album title and work with him on the title track  We literally only know of 1 Garibay-produced song from that era, and she spent way more time teasing the stuff she was doing with Zedd or DJWS or Madeon or whoever.

TBH the biggest "ARTPOP before vs. ARTPOP after" shift would probably be when she said she was finishing the album in mid September 2013... and then changed her mind, recorded Venus, (presumably) made the bulk of those edits to the Swinefest tracks, was staying in the studio w/ DJWS until 5 AM, and ended up handing it to Interscope 2 weeks past the deadline. That was kinda unhinged

- Sound: hiphop influenced EDM (Hallelujah, Cake, Kendrick Lamar collabs, Azealia Banks collabs, Manicure demo)

- Concept: decay of the blonde superstar (a nod to "it girls" like Lindsay Lohan, Anna Nicole Smith, Marilyn Monroe. Centered around fame, drugs and nightlife)

- Visuals: "sad party girl" aesthetic, that was huge among teenagers during the tumblr days (teased in her Stache/Princess Die mini era, streetwear and social media posts)

 

official ARTPOP

- Sound: EDM with a less clear direction (with more experimental songs like Aura or ballads like Dope)

- Concept: pop music as a vehicle for art (extravagant, artistic references like Andy Warhol and Botticelli, as well as Greek Mythology, which resulted in a less relatable concept for the audience)

- Visuals: camp, avant garde fashion, with a focus on technology (Fiber optic wig, Ipad dress, bubble dress, Volantis)

this is not totally true 

• Cake was never gonna be on the album, and the hip-hop influence is still on the final album with the MANiCURE instrumental break, the entirety of Jewels N Drugs, the DWUW feature we don't talk about

• 'experimental' EDM/electro stuff was always on the agenda; the title track was one of the first songs written in 2011, and then we have proof of her jamming to Mary Jane Holland and Burka/Aura in 2012

• the pop art flip was always part of the albums branding, as was the technology aspect. the fiber optic wig was revealed in 2012, so was the app, so was the title, etc.

• I wouldn't say the aesthetic was ever really a "sad party girl" thing; she had a clear-cut alter ego in Princess High, which more-or-less got fazed out in favor of the Seashell Girl in late 2013

The original ARTPOP that she had submitted to Interscope in October 2012 was rejected for whatever reason. Obviously some songs (like ARTPOP and MANiCURE) made it, but I don't know about the rest.

This! I'm working on my third album and people have no idea how much albums change over time. It takes months and months, sometimes years, to write, produce, record everything, and a lot is going to change during the process. You only set things in stone once it's released and you can't change anything anymore.

Yes and you constantly get new inspiration that go into other directions and suddenly everything changes in a heartbeat, it’s crazy 😭 but also great being free in crafting

It’s been confirmed since that she did not have a whole new album ready to go, she simply had enough material for 2 albums. It wouldn’t shock me if she repurposed some songs, lyrics or melodies in future albums like Chromatica that we never knew about.

ARTPOP went through a constant concept change, if I remember rightly after the controversial response to her actions and speeches during the later half of the BTW era, plus for the first time her having a “flop” single era (MTN only just cracking the top 30 despite all her usual promo styles) and the changing of the music landscape, ironically into the music she had taken much inspiration from on her first 2 records and much more. Her management were TRYING so hard to bring her back to the top after 3 years of being the biggest star in the world.

Princess High was the original concept (Stache, MANiCURE demo, Sex Dreams, GUY, MJH, CLLG, Red Flame and more) back when she was using Disney imagery, and said she was making less serious music. If anyone remembers she specifically tweeted and posted on LM.com that she had a meeting with her record label And she even announced that PARTYNAUSOUS was coming on Sept 12th 2012. Then when she started using weed a lot more, injured herself on tour (and hid it) then was forced to promote and have a perfume. This was when everything changed.

tbh this is the part i love the most. imho it would've been so good if she focused on this if Venus had a video and what could have come after. i mean, the G.U.Y. mv was proof enough. she can do that. but that's just me projecting.

when people were rumoring that Marvel was "in talks to have her", i could only imagine her playing Aphrodite or the siren Venus that was also a singer, and sometimes a copycat of the goddess... and an eventual foe to the X-MEN.
