Shakira’s lawyer has blamed Gerard Pique for her tax woes - and said she would have saved €120million by dating his rival star Sergio Ramos instead.

Pau Molins said her 11-year romance with the retired Barcelona footballer led to her facing 6 tax fraud charges instead of 3.

After finalising a plea deal yesterday, the lawyer claimed Spain's tax laws are not fair to everyone.

He said residents in Madrid - where Ramos played for Real Madrid- do not pay wealth tax unlike those living in Catalonia, where Shakira lived with Barca ace Pique.

Mr Molins said: "Shakira’s infatuation has cost her 120million euros.

"If she had fallen in love with Sergio Ramos instead of Gerard Pique, it would have cost her a lot less.

"They go on about the equality of all Spaniards, but it turns out that if you’re resident in Catalonia you can go to jail for a crime they couldn’t imprison you for in Madrid, even if you’re doing the same thing, because there is no wealth tax."

Mr Pau also insisted he had wanted to go to trial, saying: "I thought we could have won," but said Shakira had decided to make a deal.

He went on to defend his client, claiming: "With international artists, it’s very difficult. It’s very complicated to determine where they should pay their taxes."

There's one thing I don't quite understand, for instance with Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi they worked in Spain, the reason they were so we'll known was because they played in La Liga, and two big Spanish clubs that provide them the stage for such big careers with many trophies, big publicity contracts, etc... But Spain has very little to do with Shakira career and the money she makes. Regardless she should have payed because is the countries law, she must of course abide by the law like everyone else in Spain or according to the law of  their various Spanish autonomous communities.

Makes me think what kind of taxes Madonna payed in Portugal when she was living here lol.

It's still very little regarding her career, but regardless you pointed out that she did do worked in Spain so should have payed taxes over the money received there in Spain, probably from that company Puig for example, that's a given. It's just, that in my opinion Spain it's a small thing regarding Shakira, her worldwide success, the money she makes from music or whatever,  compared with footballers .

Don't get me wrong, I still think she should have payed taxes and do the right thing.

She spent a decade living in the UK and was always complaining about how high the tax was. IIRC one time she got audited and she had overpaid by about half a million

I was literally making a joke.

Surely you could have realised that from the blatant joke about American 'british' accents.

I mean she's still a resident in Spain so of course she has to pay taxes here? Is like saying someone with an online store business from Spain doesnt have to pay taxes 'cause they only get orders from Australia and Canada.
