Economy 52,834
https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/ontario-to-ban-unpaid-restaurant-trial-shifts-part-of-new-labour-law-coming-today-1.1998359 Read link for full details. Copying only highlights: Ontario is planning to explicitly ban unpaid trial shifts for restaurant and hospitality workers, while also strengthening rules against deducting employee wages in the event of customer theft... ...Piccini says that while it is already the law that employees must be paid for all hours worked, unpaid trial shifts are still happening as part of the interview process in some restaurants, so the practice will be specifically prohibited. Similarly, Piccini says labour laws already prohibit employers from deducting wages due to lost or stolen property, but new language will specifically ban it in instances of dine and dash or gas and dash Piccini says due to the rise of digital payment apps, including some that charge workers a fee to access their tips, the bill will also specify that employees who get paid their tips via direct deposit can choose where that money gets deposited. "We're seeing apps that are taking a cut every time ... a worker accesses their tips and that's not acceptable," Piccini said in an interview
Economy 52,834
@LaLa @StarstruckIllusion more positive labor law changes in Ontario Lowkey shocked to find out "free trials" are being done at some restaurants and that ppl get charged to access tips but i guess i shouldnt be shocked
HelloHangoverz 17,452
GOOD! I'm tired of restaurants pretending they're the exception. If you couldn't afford to pay your staff properly, you should never have gone into business in the first place Availability is not weakness

If you couldn't afford to pay your staff properly, you should never have gone into business in the first place Agreed... Also gonna expand on this a little and it may be an unpopular opinion cuz it sounds harsh but... this is why i dont show too much sympathy when ppl advocate for the businesses struggling because of higher interest rates on their debt... or that small business taxes need to be lowered even more so they can survive and compete (small business taxes are already very low) Zombie companies that fail to be productive dont benefit the economy. They usually need to underpay their workers to survive, rarely manage to be innovative, and rarely provide much competition to the sector anyway The labor they use up can be more productive in other companies that are more productive and can offer the same goods and services at the same price while paying workers more and still make profit so they can pay taxes and support your retirement funds via stock performance (the latter only applying to publicly traded Corporations) Some companies need to be allowed to die. Its actually not healthy for an economy to try and sustain as many businesses as possible on life support because they essentially clutter the sectors and get in the way of efficiency and prosperity

A small business shouldn’t be afforded the luxury of existing for the sake of small business. Small business is good, but a stagnant operation surviving the bare minimum is not helpful. I’m with you! Free up the labor to be supported elsewhere. The business of undercutting employees because it’s small business is manipulative and unfair to honest earners. And dont get me wrong I do think theres a place to support small businesses too. Its tough out there and hard to get a footing to compete with big businesses Small businesses also offer potential new competition to force existing companies to keep innovating, keep prices low and prevent monopoloes. Start ups are important. Sometimes the most revolutionairy new ideas also come from new small businesses! So slightly lower tax rates for small businesses, financial incentives (depending on the type) etc can do good just to help level the plainfield with the corps But within reason. Small businesses have a lot of innovative start ups but they also have a lot of wannabees as well that dont know how to run an efficient business. Those businesses need to be allowed to go and yeah i agree with u it can be manipulative to their undercompensated employees Supporting small businesses is only good to a point. Its not an at all costs kinda situation cuz u do get diminishing returns after a point. Some businesses do have to die, trying to resist it with endless tax credits, debt forgiveness/bailouts, cheap labor (unrealistically low minimum wages) etc does more harm than good
