Romanian bison to move to Azerbaijan in rewilding Caucasus programme

A female European bison from the Zoo in Târgu Mureș, Romania, has been selected to join the reintroduction programme in Shahdag National Park in Azerbaijan, in the Caucasus Mountains. The animal will be transported to Berlin first, where it is set to join bison from other European zoos.

The main goal of the programme is to establish a viable population of European bison on the southern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains in eastern Azerbaijan.

The reintroduction of bison began in 1952 in Poland, in the Białowieża Forest, and today, various bison reintroduction programmes are underway in Belarus, Russia, Slovakia, Romania, Poland and Germany.

 In 2012, WWF Azerbaijan identified 11 potential sites in the Caucasus Mountains and two potential areas in the steppe.

Such a beautiful place, this is breathtaking ! I hope this bison will be treated well, it must be scary for an animal to leave a place and be transfered to a different location. New landscapes, new scents. I hope the reintroduction will be successful !

I like to think bisons are resilient as a species! They basically came back from the dead in Europe and now they are living in great numbers in many places across Europe. Fun fact: One bison was even seen in the village I live (not by me though ).. this after they were exterminated from the continent for many decades.

One difference though is that the Caucasus Mountains are much taller than the Carpathians, but hopefully given the bisons are doing well in the Carpathians it shows can they adapt to both mountanous and plain conditons (like in Poland/Belarus) - so versatility can hopefully play into their favour!

Oh I really didn't know that they almost disappeared from Europe ! This is great news to see that they seem to be thriving now !

It's interesting for me to  learn about their versatility and their adaptation faculties ! Let's hope for the best and I want to thank you for bringing me some knowledge on this subject !
