Amid criticism that very high immigration rates (adding 1.2% to population annually thru immigration alone) is making the severe housing shortage, Trudeau and the Liberals announced that 2024 & 2025 will be the last years immigration targets will be raised.

Current targets of 450,000 a year is due to rise to 485,000 in 2024 and then 500,000 in 2025 but after that the Government plans to freeze it at 500k for a number of years to give housing a chance to catch up

If 2025 targets hit a ceiling as planned, it will be the first time in decades the annual target isnt raised along with population growth

I'm generally pro-immigration but this makes sense because the cost of housing is beyond...

I had to move back in with 3 other people this year, after living solo for the past few years, because I couldn't afford my rent anymore ... :(

500k is still too high

Hmm not so much considering factors like low birth rate, mortality rate, and emigration.

I’m pro immigration, but the current number is very unsustainable.

When immigrants are welcomed to Canada they need to be able to have roof over their head.

Birth rates are declining because Canadians cannot afford children, and are emigrating because of high cost of living.

Supplementing Canadian citizens with immigration won’t solve anything long term. Immigration has always been apart of Canadas strategy, helping raise the standard of living for people already here is more important than population growth.

It is high i agree @StarstruckIllusion. Canadas population last year grew 2.9%. Thats almost unheard of in a developed Nation and its also a strain when the Country has failed to boost enough housing supply

If it was the US... 500K is not that huge... but for a more mid-tier sized Country like Canada with 40M people, 500k is a lot

500k would be more duable if we had been more organized on how to grow with a better plan. But we failed to do that and are only getting serious about housing now that its gotten totally out of hand

PS: its also worth noting that 500k is just standard target immigration for permanent residences. Last year Canads grew 1.1M because theres also temporary workers on visa, international students etc that can swing numbers. There was also a tiny amount of natural growth also
