crazygato 535
In my mind I always think this is how the singles release strategy should go and why for Gaga: 1st Single- the first song should always be explosive, strange, and new but commercial at the same time. It should draw interest and have a bit of controversy to have more attention. 2nd Single- leading up to the album release, the second song to represent the record should be "generic" but likeable enough. Not too generic or forgettable either. It should be a song that instantly draws you/people in! No controversy, just passion and energy! Very important for the sale of the album, this song will convince "most" of the GP to buy the album and could be the album biggest hit. 3rd Single- this release should continúe the hype and sale of the album, so in that case should be like a mix of the 1st and 2nd strategy. Commercial and likeable enough but with a sprinkle of "controversy" again to draw attention. Usually would be the song that receives more streams and attention from fans and GP after the album release. Could also be the biggest hit off the album. 4th Single- at this point, most people attention spans would dissipate so it be up to the label and artist to compromise on the single choice. I personally would pick a "radio friendly" track just to continúe the sale of the album but a risky choice could also work just to draw in different listeners. Basically after the 3rd single, it doesnt really matter what choice if the album is already successful with the first 3 singles, anything goes! What you think of this singles release strategy? How would yours go? Agree or disagree? Here's an example using ARTPOP: 1. G.U.Y 2. Applause (Album Release) 3. Do What U Want 4. Gypsy
Zaskar 3,962
In the era of steaming, singles mean nothing apart from the lead one. After the free album release, whichever single is good and liked by audience will automatically pick up.

ssslyboy 3,273
I like G.U.Y. but it would have flopped as a lead. Do What U Want may have performed slightly better as lead, particularly if R. Kelly was missing, but Applause may have been the best choice. (It actually fits into your 1st single category of explosive and strange even more than G.U.Y., tbh.) Another thought: how do ballads fit into this strategy? Should "River" have been lead and "Flowers" followup? Almost definitely not. Ballads make good first single choices sometimes. Anderson123 38,754
Singles are so random sometimes, especially Gaga's. I like this strategy they've kinda used: Good Lead single, kinda safe but commercial and catchy: Just Dance, Born This Way, Applause, Stupid Love. Second single: The obvious bigger hit(potential), maybe collaboration, better song: Poker Face, Judas, Do What U Want, Rain On Me. I think Gaga is at a point in her career where she can take advantage of the lead single hype because that's always going to get attention, and then a stronger 2nd single. It wouldnt with an image rebrand and if promoted correctly, and of course, a slightly different and shorter MV. The song is commercial enough, a little weird and somewhat controversial with the lyrics about feminism and submitting to a man but knowing she still holds power in other ways and therefore equal to him. The song was produced by Zedd and he was blowing up around 2013-14. 1 hour ago, ssslyboy said: how do ballads fit into this strategy? Should "River" have been lead and "Flowers" followup? julz 7,377
Reminds me of: Bad Romance, Telephone, Alejandro Though, im afraid we wont get anything close anymore to Bad Romance. The song is so up there. Replay is actually a contender for me, i will forever root for it as the should-have-been lead single for Chromatica. I think I subconciously was thinking of TFM era and how the singles were released! Perfect match for my strategy release! I feel Alice or Enigma would have worked better as a lead, especially Enigma if promoted well.

Noir 17,655
It’s the fact she doesn’t release her most Gaga songs which could also be “hits” like Starstruck, Monster, Gypsy, Sour Candy, Replay, Bloody Mary (I know it’s a single now but c’mon it was there for years). It irks me.

Even tho the songs you mentioned are ****ing AMAZING and totally GAGA, her label probably wants the moray GP-friendly songs as singles and not her actually better songs tbh
River 117,775
say what u want, do what u want with this single, but Donatella would have smashed, it's a club anthem, it's viral, iconic, it's THE single that got away from ARTPOP So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy
