After months of teasing, Lady Gaga’s fourth studio album ARTPOP arrived in August 2013 with its anthemic lead single “Applause”, kicking off a 15-month journey like no other. Unmatched in ambition & energy, ARTPOP would see Gaga’s artistry rise to new heights as she explored the interconnected spheres of art & music. Across 15 tracks of frenzied, roof-raising EDM, the world of ARTPOP encompasses classical mythology & cutting-edge rappers, meditating on sex, celebrity & self-empowerment. This is an album without any skips, bolstered by crisp, future-facing productions from hitmakers including Zedd, Madeon, Rick Rubin, David Guetta & executive producer DJ White Shadow.

The ARTPOP era was a maximalist, in-your-face carnival, where no day was the same as the last. Gaga travelled the world delivering some of the most creative looks & performances of her career, the thrill-a-minute vortex of ARTPOP pulling Elton John, Lisa Vanderpump, Twista, Jeff Koons & Miss Piggy in for the ride. From swine masks to spit roasts, Machete Kills to modern art, Toto the dog to Kermit the frog, Volantis the flying dress to Venus the goddess of love, the album’s promo cycle was consistently innovative & always interesting. There was blood, sweat, tears, a little vomit, & a whole lotta love. You truly had to be there.

The ninth biggest seller of 2013 worldwide, ARTPOP is now Platinum certified in the US, & although misunderstood at the time, its critical reputation is being increasingly rehabilitated. With the album turning 10 this November, join us on this reverse Warholian expedition as we celebrate an era like no other.

Let’s talk about “Do What U Want”. As you know, this song was removed from ARTPOP in 2019. I have wrestled with whether to include it in the rate, & ultimately I feel it’s important that we do consider this song as part of the history of ARTPOP. As our consumption of “Do What U Want” can no longer financially benefit the original duet partner, I encourage you to consider any version of the song when voting. The Christina Aguilera remix remains on streaming, & despite what the Spotify credits say, the 2020 legal leak revealed that R. Kelly makes no money from this version. If you’re unsure, play your original CD/downloads from when you first bought the record.

Secondly: there are 3 optional extras in this rate. You don’t have to score these, but it’ll be interesting to see how Gagadaily feels about them, 10 years on. These 3 songs were all released in some form by Gaga herself in 2012/13. I’m reluctant to direct you towards leaks, & I’m not comfortable asking you to rate a song based on its live remix, so these will be the only ARTPOP-era bonus songs in this rate.

It must be said that Do What U Want deserves to be on the record! It's one of her best songs and it's crucial to the album's themes and narrative. I hope one day she can restore the solo version, which was on the album pre-release for a very long time before the last-minute rework, and which was released in some regions on compilation CDs.
