Canada saw another 12 month population growth record of 1.1 Million or a 2.7% growth rate, by far the highest in the developed world

The Country of 40.2M people had normally always been generally unanimously welcoming to immigration across all political parties, demographics and age groups with support for immigration hitting as high as 85% of the population

However the ever worsening housing crisis in the Country is recently causing a less united opinion on the subject with support among conservatives and young people declining while others suggest the target numbers need to be scaled back until housing has a chance to catch up

Meanwhile Trudeaus Government says the need for skilled labour among an ageing population is too great to consider lowering immigration quotas

Thats different tho. International students dont stay here permanently unless they go thru some seperate process. They arw not a part of the 500,000 immigrant targets even tho they count for population growth during the period they reside here

Imo tho they need to target trades people more

I mean im not surprised conservatives are among the first ones to fold on this but at the same time the *pertends to be shocked* insinuates a connection to US conservatives which to be frank they are nothing alike when it comes to immigration

Also given the Government raised quotas so much without a plan to house everyone, i dont think its unreasonable to question it or have an opinion against it

The shift in opinions in a time of housing crunch suggests ppl are not supporting high immigration as much not so much because of racism or xenophobia but because many no longer think the economic benefits are worth the cost of trying to take in so many

Its also not surprising polls showed the greatest decline among younger people which are the most affected by housing crisis as well tho this article doesnt go into that

On a side note the Government & Provinces are finally taking the issue more seriously and trying to find ways to boost comstruction speed but still, even if successful it will take several years to restore some measure of affordability

So I'm a super left-wing person generally, but what's going on in the country is currently a bit ridiculous and it's a sad thing to see the liberal party on the federal level flub so hard on things that the population as a whole (generally) seems to be pushing back against considering current housing issues, not targetting specialized tradespeople for immigration, and making it near impossible for some experienced individuals coming in to actually do said 'specialized' work. Canada may be huge, but not when everyone is basically coming to 2-3 cities.

It's a bit scary considering what this means for the upcoming election season since I really didn't want to deal with the risk of radical (American?) right-wing ideology potentially flooding into the federal government and starting to toy with the rights of marginalized people, including those of immigrants. The government continues to be a bit tone-deaf about the increasing nationalism and xenophobia going on and their only pushback is to potentially increase the numbers of people coming in...

They're going to regret migrating here once we become the worst-performing country in the OECD

In just a decade. :rip:

totally agree, and yeah the next federal election is going to be a sht-show

I live in a small city outside the GTA, but our college has the most international students in Ontario, maybe actually Canada too, and people are PISSED. The growing resentment toward immigrants is not pretty

I think they need to just pull back immigrant targets for a few years and focus on housing and other infrastructure. Once we manage to up our game with housing builds and and other stuff, then by all means we can increase it again

500,000 a year (plus the variance from international students which is seperate) is too much rn. We cant hand it at the moment

I love immigration. Is a part of Canadian Identity. Its why in Canada one of the first things u ask someone when you meet them is "whats your background"... when i went to the US ppl found such a question odd. But in Canada its so normal since the vast majority of ppl are either outside Canada born, or they are 2nd or 3rd generation immigrants from the last several decades. Few identify purely as Canadian

But cultural enrichment aside, we need to be realistic in how many we can handle

Most of them do end up applying for work visas and then permanent residence though

But then they are part of the immigration targets if they do and they simply take up a spot from someone else who might otherwise have come instead

The long term population growth should roughly equal the immigration target plus any natural population growth (which soon will be 0)

I think this last year its been way above that because of catchup. Immigration and students were down during covid and now its a backlogue catchup... presumably next year population growth should be closer to 500,000 to 600,000 not 1M

Still tho, even factoring in that the last year was an aberation... a more normal 500,000 is still too high for the present housing situation

Sorry just a side note... i dont think the 2 cities is true anymore...

All of Canada is experiencing record growth. Alberta grew proportionally to Ontario and BC... the Atlantic Provinces are growing again rapidly for the first time in decades, and cities such as Ottawa that were omce affordable are now strained by growth. Souther Ontario such as Chatham and London are growing solid as well

This is not longer a Toronto & Vancouver accounting for most of the growth on their own anymore kinda story
