The Office Is Getting Rebooted

American remakes of British TV shows are notoriously woeful, with many failing to make it past their first season if not the pilot. Offensive examples include Peep Show, The IT Crowd, Spaced, Only Fools and Horses, and The Inbetweeners.

NBC’s The Office, based on Ricky Gervais’ aughts-defining mockumentary series, defied the odds. After a shaky first season that mostly revised the original show’s beats, the US version found its feet and heart in an award-winning, hilarious stretch of television.

It ended its nine-season run in 2013, but it’s still one of the most prolifically quoted shows in pop culture, not to mention its constant popularity on streaming. Well, it looks like a proper reboot is on the horizon, and fans don’t hate it… they just don’t like it at all… and it might be terrible.

According to a new report from Puck News, a reboot of The Office is set to be announced once the WGA strike comes to an end, with Greg Daniels returning as showrunner.

Daniels discussed the prospect of a reboot in February last year, telling The Hollywood Reporter: “When people hear ‘reboot,’ they think it’s the exact same show. I don’t think that would work. I also think that the content was very much pitched for that period of time, when people weren’t as sensitive to what is giving offense to people so that you could have a boss who kept putting his foot in it,” he said.

Daniels said he wouldn’t try to “redo” it or pitch another Michael Scott. “The part I would take is the documentary format and the idea that it is an examination from a documentarian’s perspective,” he added.

Horrible idea that will (at best) last 3 seasons and will be featured on countless “biggest flop tv shows” YouTube compilations. :alsemanche:

This is such a bad idea on paper, interested to see what becomes of it. Fans loved the show because of the cast, can it really happen again??

But of course Parks and Recreation started off as a spin off to The Office and it ended up doing it's own thing really well.

Wow sounds like a perfect way to undermine the strike... capitalize on nostalgia views, produce a show that will need very very little story development in comparison to something totally new..... hire scab actors that are desperate for roles and who would love to have their names attached to a the iconic Office.

Idk maybe I drank some cookoo kool-aid, but it just seems to align all too well

This reaction has never been more appropriate

Who else is attached to the project?? I'm curious about the fact Greg Daniels actually signed on to it. But without BJ Novak, Mindy Kaling and Paul Lieberstein it will not be the same.

Why can't they just stop ****ing rebooting everything that used to be popular to try and make a quick buck off the brand name. It's sick. I doubt these people actually have any passion towards creating something that holds up to the original. This is going to tank so bad and leave a stain on The Office's name. I'm interested to hear if the Office Ladies talk about it on their podcast...

Honestly another spin-off ala Parks and Rec could be okay, and based in a modern setting gives it a chance to be something new. But do not reboot the beloved classic just 10 years after it finished.

Netflix tried to do a new season of Arrested Development 10 years after the original series, and even had the original cast, and it was a pile of dog ****. I guess we will see

P.S. Who is this going to appeal to tbh?? New viewers won't have the context needed to understand the show structure, old fans will vehemently reject it, if it's too boundary pushing and not politically correct the younger generation will destroy them online...

If they're not going to follow the original formula and its going to cater to modern tastes, then I feel like the whole show will basically be made of characters like those annoying siblings in P&R

Always knew that it would be **** even back when greta was involved. I love the show and cast and it's not that you can't do that kinda comedy/storylines now it's just needs nuance and that's just not happening

They really need to understand that millennials and gen z are two different audiences trying to appeal to both by capitalizing on nostalgia and clout is frankly lazy case in point the god awful mess that was gossip girl even the recent I carly while not a reboot apparently was the same. I genuinely think these formulas could be revised or revisited but with their own identity obviously original content is always best but I I'm not really against reboots and remakes but i think if you can't add any nuance jut don't do it.

I'm here for well-written, modern spin-offs, set in the same universe. Not remakes and reboots. And you can easily tell when it's a cash grab vs a passion project. Another example that comes to mind is the recent Charmed reboot :bear:
