Billy Porter breaks down his issue with Harry Styles on Vogue cover

His problem isn’t with Styles (after he first spoke out against the cover, Porter sent him flowers “as an apology”). “It’s not Harry Styles’s fault that he happens to be white and cute and straight and fit into the infrastructure that way … I call out the gatekeepers.”

Porter doesn’t claim to be “the first” to push gender stereotypes in culture. “I know David Bowie existed, I know Sylvester existed.”

Styles, however, is “white and he’s straight. That’s why he’s on the cover. Non-binary blah blah blah blah. No. It doesn’t feel good to me. You’re using my community – or your people are using my community – to elevate you. You haven’t had to sacrifice anything.”

Will always support a good Hemorrhoid Styles lashing because I’m a hater and that’s who I am.

This is still such a stupid criticism :sharon:

Like, first, you don't know if he's straight or not.

Second, you don't get to gatekeep femininity and genderqueer expression. Gay, straight, or otherwise, Harry or anyone else doesn't need your permission or the permission of any LGBTQ person to dress and express themselves how they want to.

People like him complain about men being put in a box but the second someone steps out of that box, they're "queer baiting" and "using the community" :smh:

I mean he’s not wrong.

LGBTQ ppl push boundaries and rarely get praise for it.

straight ppl push boundaries and everyone r like “wow a trailblazer, so fearless and inspiring!”

Pronounced like “Balenciaga” . Emphasis on the “Ga”

So why is he mad at Harry and not at the publication that hit him up for their cover?

It sounds less like Billy wanting queer people in the spotlight and more like Billy being bitter that Harry was picked over him :nails:

He claims he wanted a star on the cover that pushed gender boundaries/norms and that's exactly what Harry is.

He's only mad that it wasn't him :ladyhaha:

It isn’t against Harry. He knows it’s the publication :ohwell: He’s frustrated about the situation which is understandable. He didn’t choose the right wording but yes, he knows it’s Vogue.

I still say he's bitter that it wasn't him on the cover instead of someone else. Saying "they didn't use a gay person" is just a convenient excuse :fan:

Me @ Billy when he's still the only person complaining about this:

Being on a magazine cover at this point is truly whatever… He is the only one still holding onto these kinds of things but yeah… I don’t think he’s bitter that it wasn’t him :flippy:

I mean, I get where he’s coming from. It’d be in a way much more revolutionary with someone who is out and proudly representing the “community” like Conan, Adam Lambert, Kit Connor… someone who is out, is all :ohwell:

But you misread it lmao he isn’t gatekeeping, he’s calling *out* the gatekeepers that propped up Harry styles as THE queer fluid icon when he’s by all accounts not that and gatekept actual queer people. That’s his beef, seemingly.

Comments like these are why the alt-right says that straight and white people are under attack.

We all know the real reason he’s upset is because he didn’t get the attention and accolades that came with the cover.

His priority is his career and that only. He was complaining about the strikes making him lose money the other day, he only cares when he’s impacted.
