The problem with ARTPOP is not the album, it's the era.

so true i feel like if she took a longer break and it was presented differently, it wouldve smashed

Manicure & Sex Dreams, about 90% of this fanbase are disappointed by the studio versions

I've never understood the hype for iTunes festival version, especially X Dreams since it feels kinda empty during chorous

Does ARTPOP get singled out that much?

I would think around GGD Joanne would be the one getting singled out more for not being electronic.

I think it was mostly because she was overexposed at the time, then the album didn't sell as much as her previous records (which were record breaking in itself and you can't replicate that it sort of just happens) and this gave haters fuel to talk sh-t and then it became trendy (though Gaga knew this was gonna happen because she's a master in Fame and knew this part of the Fame journey is inevitable.

The way people wanted to end her was insane tbh. Acting like she was Nico Robin or something

The whole “flop” narrative is so stupid. BTW singles were already kind of struggling. Marry The Night flopped in comparison to the previous singles. Applause could have been a bigger hit if it was released in a different month to avoid Katy. Maybe in July. Do What You Want was MEANT to be the smash from the era and it wasn’t heavily influenced by EDM, I could see it thriving in late 2013/2014 despite EDM’s “fall”

It was a lively and ambitious idea but I feel like it just wasn't executed very well. Not to fault Gaga bc her management was not at all willing to compromise at the time. Had Gaga been able to follow her vision from the start, I feel like the finished product would have been vastly different from what we got.

I think it’s singled out not because EDM was dead, but for many people they just didn’t think it was good EDM. Simple as that.

Shame. Some of the instrumentals are ****ing gorgeous and deserve more praise.

She hyped it up and then nothing. Bam. It was like it didn’t exist anymore. Gaga also said that it was during one of the worst periods of her life. PTSD.

Agreed. She had a vision. She wanted a music video for every song on the album. She wanted to do more, but couldn’t.

It was the first time we got to see/hear some of the ARTPOP stuff. SwineFest was EPIC at the time. It was the height of that era, before it disappeared.

It's the lore of it all, the fanfare. Its discussion within the fanbase is so massive that it's made it to major news outlets. It is so engrained with fascinating parts and major catalyst moments in her career. It's also the era that was hyped the longest.

Gaga started talking about "the next one" and seemed to be subtly teasing lyrics, titles, and concepts before she even announced the BTWB in Feb 2012. Then by the summer we knew the producers, possible or in the works collabs (Kendrick, Azealia, Elton), and knew that she had been meeting with Interscope about its release. She even played new music [title track and Nothing On (But the Radio) (ARTPOP Version)] in her car in Chicago and NYC for fans. Then she revealed the title in August and talked about multiple acts, the app, and revealed song titles and lyrics on littlemonsters.com and backstage at the BTWB through February.

Then you have the hip....this was unlike anything that had happened to any pop star of her generation and while most of the concern was focused on Gaga's health and the tour being cancelled, ARTPOP's fate was obviously unknown for a while. Then ensued the first real blackout of her career. With the delay, years of hype and discussion, and success of her previous albums, expectations and our wildest dreams were out of this world. Fans who were around will never forget some of the ideas and thoughts about the era that they had of their own and ended up expecting to become reality. It couldn't have possibly lived up to our expectations at that point.

Now its certainly appreciated more for what did end up being, the memories and feelings of the hype and all of the ideas thrown around/announced will always be there.

I'm absolutely certain that what ARTPOP turned out to be had NOTHING TO DO with what Gaga wanted it to be. She just ended up bowing to pressure from her label and management team and making an album that was supposed to be "commercial" after BTW was interpreted as not being as successful as it could have been (bombastic hits ala Bad Romance). I think during that time she tried to sustain the experimental album narrative, as if to reinstate some control over the product, but that she eventually dropped that narrative. There is literally one song produced by Guetta and will.i.am (which turns out to be surprisingly the best on the album, but where it is clear Gaga's input that she managed to make something worthy out of a label-mandated collaboration). I think many of us, and especially her, know that that album is a lackluster effort, that has little and nothing to do with what she wanted to do at the time and was in a position to deliver to the world. Each and every one of her previous and subsequent musical projects are exceptional, and true works of authorship.
