Lizzo releases a statement

These last few days have been gut wrenchingly difficult and overwhelmingly disappointing. My work ethic, morals and respectfulness have been questioned. My character has been criticized. Usually I choose not to respond to false allegations but these are as unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous to not be addressed.
These sensationalized stories are coming from former employees who have already publicly admitted that they were told their behavior on tour was inappropriate and unprofessional.

As an artist I have always been very passionate about what I do. I take my music and my performances seriously because at the end of the day I only want to put out the best art that represents me and my fans. With passion comes hard work and high standards. Sometimes I have to make hard decisions but it's never my intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable or like they aren't valued as an important part of the team.

I am not here to be looked at as a victim, but I also know that I am not the villain that people and the media have portrayed me to be these last few days. I am very open with my sexuality and expressing myself but I cannot accept or allow people to use that openness to make me out to be something I am not. There is nothing I take more seriously than the respect we deserve as women in the world. I know what it feels like to be body shamed on a daily basis and would absolutely never criticize or terminate an employee because of their weight.

I'm hurt but I will not let the good work I've done in the world be overshadowed by this. I want to thank everyone who has reached out in support to lift me up during this difficult time.

So she is denying everything... But at the same time not really denying it and instead is saying that she has high standards and openness

Good PR

So basically she says they’re lies but then she makes it seem as thought there’s some truth to it 🤔 someone insert the Oprah gif

The sad thing about situations like this, is that there's rarely any 'evidence' on either side. So ultimately the innocent party doesn't have any real means to defend themselves.

If Lizzo is innocent, there isn't a single thing she could say to prove her innocence. Most people have already made their decision about whether or not she's at fault, without concrete information to back it up. Which makes sense, because concrete information just isn't there. It's a pure matter of trust.

It's important to take supposed victims seriously, but that doesn't automatically prove that the accused is guilty. Those are two different things.

Sadly, the court of public opinion doesn't know that kind of nuance or patience.

Me trying to understand what she actually means. It looks like there's truth in the story but she's trying to spin it in a high level of work ethic. Regardless of how you spin it, this remains fishy and I don't believe her.

If this ends up all being false, I’ll feel terrible for Lizzo. People have been watching this woman with a magnifying glass, waiting for her to slip so they could say all the vile things they’ve been holding onto.

It sounds to me like she had some banter with the team that might have gone too far but we are all human I guess. And maybe she terminated some people and they didn't like her demeanor? Idk we will never know I guess

Here’s what I’ll say having a toxic boss myself. Oftentimes they don’t really see themselves as toxic. They typically have that “we’re a family” mentality about things so they don’t always view themselves strictly from the perspective as an employer. They see themselves as friends or the ideal “cool boss” so they’re more relaxed on certain things like sex and sexuality. All this is to say that you’re 100% right but based on this statement, I genuinely believe her when she says she meant no harm (if she committed some). Does that excuse harm caused? Absolutely not at all but I think the psych is important in regards to how you address the problem. If anything, a lack of intent is illuminating and important. I think a lot of these stars don’t see themselves as employers except for when they’re, in some ways, cosplaying as one as needed. That’s how you get problems like gaga and Richie, this with lizzo, etc. There’s no tutorial for suddenly becoming a boss in entertainment it just is thrown on you. It’s a breeding ground for improper behavior to happen.

Yeah I agree. And in my opinion, it doesn't warrant the black/white reaction that the internet is giving right now. People just jump on the bandwagon because they love drama, and leave no room for the kind of complexities you describe.

Often the truth lies somewhere in the middle, but that wouldn't make for exciting headlines or funny tweets.

holy scheisse

I personally have a hard time with the “believe accusers” mentality that says you ought to unquestioningly side with them, no matter what... It is true that an overwhelming majority of people who accuse others of SA are telling the truth, and perhaps that alone is a bit different. But can we really conflate that to like… accusations of ANY sort of indiscretion?

Not that I’m choosing Lizzo’s side either. I don’t wanna choose any sides lol it’s not my business. But just saying.

I think there would have to be a lot of scheming if multiple dancers got together to create a false narrative and file the lawsuit… it’s not just “she’s mean,” there’s a lawsuit… patiently awaiting more evidence.
