Melanie Martinez announces plans for hiatus from music

In a recent interview, Melanie Martinez announced that once her promo cycle and tour are completed for Portals, she will be taking a break from music.

Appearing on SiriusXM, she explained: “After this leg of the tour I will be trying to shoot as many [music videos] as possible.

“Ideally for me, shooting all 11 of them together in these three months before I go back out on tour would be nice, because then I can take time to edit them and roll them out. That’s my plan, I’m hoping to achieve that.”

Asked if she planned to take any time off, Martinez explained: “After the end of next year will be the time where I’m like, ‘OK, now I’m off cycle again’ and I can just chill and make music and make sculptures and paint and just create, hang out with my dogs.”

She continued: “I take a long time to create my projects, so I’ll usually have four years where I’m just MIA. Not anywhere to be found, just literally at my house making art.”

This sounds kinda shocking on first read but it totally tracks for her and that's fine! She's going to roll out 11 music videos over the next year, then direct, film and co-edit a whole film that she's written/writing and release that. Then probably take another couple years to finish writing, recording and producing her next album.

So 4 years until a new album makes sense. It was 4 years between K-12 and Portals. The difference is that this time around she will be releasing music videos and the movie slowly, so we will remain fed. Last time we got it all at once and then barely anything for 4 years. And who knows? Maybe she will release a small EP in between like she did with After School. Or work on a few side projects. Collabs would be cool!

Yeah she said at the end of this leg of tour she wants to smash out all the MVs, then head back out onto tour next year, and at the end of next year take her hiatus to write

If we’re really getting a video for almost every song on Portals I’m fine with this. Melanie puts a lot effort into her projects and gives quality in terms of music and visuals. She’s been able to do so with a 4-year cycle so if it ain’t broke no need to fix it I guess. Next one should be out in 2027 and I wonder where she’ll go since Portals is supposedly the end of Cry Baby’s story.

Honestly, I understand. I work in the performing arts and while I love everything I do, jumping for project to project with little job security and basically no rest in between is exhausting. If you are able to sustain yourself, take all the time you need as an artist between projects. Adele, Björk and other huge names do this and they always come back with strong new material that feels both matured and fresh.
