Earth's Oceans Getting More Green - Likely Climate Change Related

56% of Earth's Ocean Covered Water area has on average gotten more green on the surface instead of the traditional deep blue.

 

Scientists do not get fully understand why and because the hues vary from year to year there may be longer term cycles involved that are not yet known so it is hard to gage the exact cause of why this is happening

 

However a major theory is that increases life among bottom of the food chain sea creatures such as phytoplankton may have something to do with it. It is generally believed that high levels of microorganisms including phytoplankton in water increases the green tone in ocean colour

 

Phytoplankton and other organisms like them play a huge role in Earth's production of Oxygen (more on a net basis than even the Amazon forest). Increased carbon dioxide and warmer temperatures may be fueling their growth by providing them with the ideal conditions they thrive in

 

Yet (while not mentioned specifically in the article I'm adding this on) more micro organisms is not always good as some types of algae that bloom in heat can also be poisonous to Ocean water when their concentrations get too high

Yup. I was watching a video a few days ago on IG of some random family going to the beach and going on a cruise and I was like "that water is odly green." Didn't though much of it until I read this.

I don't think greenish water is necessarily abnormal even before climate change really got serious

 

I know the exact hue of colour varies from area to area depending on a number of factors and even in the same area it can change over time... Depth of water, cloud cover, amount of sand mixing etc can also affect it 

 

But I guess the idea is that the amount of green on the Ocean across the globe on average now vs before has increased

Yes, even the sea here in Italy is turning green. It's all over the news but the "experts" keep saying it's normal and there is nothing to be worried about

Sorry to point this out but there isn't a "before climate change."  The climate has been changing since Earth was created billions of years ago.  Earth is the true queen of reinvention.

But really even if I hadn't said that part... I think ppl get the point we don't have to be THAT technical

 

Most ppl know Earth's climate changes long term typically when ppl talk climate change they are referring to the rapid climate change since industrial revolution...

 

As in the climate we changed in 1.5 Centuries that normally takes several Millenia to occur even during periods of rapid change (with the exeption of something drastic like a massive volcanic eruption or some huge asteroid fall that darkens the skies)
