Why is ‘vampire’ underperforming?

Sorry but the song is nothing new. It sounds like a combination of at least three of her songs from Sour. It's safe and predictable.

Maybe if she went for a slightly edgier direction like Taylor's Reputation or rock like Miley's Plastic Hearts or dance like Dua Lipa, she would've made her sophomore album more of an event. Flowers was big because it sounds refreshing for Miley and also has resonant themes.

As much as female artists don't need to reinvent every era, it's just how the business works to keep audiences interested, unless you are Adele.

She said that the album will be rockier, the next single is ready, and she already shot a video for it. Drivers License was not indicative of how Sour would sound as it had edgier songs like brutal, good 4 u, jealousy jealousy as the rockier side and then many other piano and guitar ballads like traitor, happier, and favorite crime

vampire is darker than anything on Sour and lyrically more mature. She may not be reinventing herself, but she is showing growth

Flowers was an anomaly because Endless Summer Vacation underperformed and the album is pretty bad. Guts is guaranteed to smash

She is boring and because of TikTok its easier to hop onto newer and better releases. I also think because the world is a lot more global -- people don't really care for newer American artists. Can you take in how New Jean's Super Shy music video already beat vampire's views and its only been a week... Jung Kook's Seven already has 49 million views in just one day.

Times are different and American music is getting boring.

It’s always funny when people say an artists is boring or generic, but then praise K-pop music sounding like any song from the 2010s :icant:

I sure hope so because the album cover and visuals are screaming SOUR Deluxe Edition. If she will do rock, it needs to be more punk or glam.

Also, I mentioned Flowers as an example of a huge lead single. Miley's entire album obviously underperformed mainly because it is not promoted well and the songs doesn't have the appeal of Flowers. Guts is the follow-up album of a huge debut. Of course, it will do some numbers. But longevity is important.

Well she is giving unseasoned quirky wanna alt rebel girlie from 2005. The song doesn't have a good hook, lyrically flat, sounds like a forgettable song played during the credits of some crappy coming of age film. :bear:

Also I'm not even a fan of kpop and a lot of it is generic but yes New Jeans is innovative and bringing something fresh to pop music period. Super Shy is literally Jersey Club and Drum N Bass combined into a pop song - never done before. The angsty singer songwriter snooze fest trope on the other hand is generic. Heck Jung Kook's Seven is UK Garage which no American pop singer has done and it is a growing genre amongst Gen Z.

If you think Seven or UK Garage is a unique genre, I recommend you listen to this

The song follows a very similar formula to those on her first album. I agree the expectation that female musicians produce wildly different eras is a bit unfair, but most musicians need to grow and evolve to retain the staying power. Even Adele, while still successful, has recently faded because she's perceived as not evolving enough.

:ladyhaha: dkm this is literally a generic 2020 pop song.

I can't educate your ears to listen to music differently but yes lots of music has been very similar and boring. Disco, Funk, House using the same boring four on the floor beat or Trap which made rap stale. Olivia Rodrigo and WILLOW were at the fore front of bringing back that rock, alt sound back but people are kind of over it. Now we're starting to see it shift with fresh genres like Jersey Club, Drum N Bass, UK Garage, Hyperpop, etc.

Sugar Baby

It was cute but it came and went

plus her refusing to change a little made her boring, the video and song could be from the sour era and the album cover literally looks like the same photoshoot from sour

It's very unmemorable tbh, I listened to it when it came out and have no idea wha it sounds like. I was shocked to see it debut so high

Yeah, I'm feeling this might be a factor, too. Whether it's fair or not to female artists, part of the excitement is seeing how conceptually different their new eras are and with Vampire it just feels a bit like it could have been Sour Deluxe.

Maybe she just needs to push it more. I mean, as people have said, other artists have been able to gain longevity without doing too much to switch it up. Ariana Grande's eras in my head are all mixed up, but her singles were undeniable hits and she was everywhere promoting.

I'm think she may have waited too long also? 2 years feels a bit too long for a new artist between releases.

If this was a daring retro rock song the streaming would have been through the roof. This would be 5th/6th single worthy of it was in her debut album. She better pull out a rockier song next or she will flop.
