Alejandro Analysis

So, I think Alejandro is quite an interesting song lyrically and I thought I would take a shot at figuring out the meaning:partysick:

We know it is about Gaga's fear of men monster but I think the song explores this idea/theme in interesting way using storytelling.

I know that we are young
And I know that you may love me
But I just can't be with you like this anymore
Alejandro

Oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh

So first it opens with tension between Gaga (or the subject of the song) and her lover Alejandro which begs the question "What has gone wrong between them? or "Why can't they be together?"

She's got both hands in her pocket
And she won't look at you, won't look at you
She hides true love en su bolsillo
She's got a halo around her finger, around you

Now here I think the ring on her hand in her pocket is a metaphor/refers to how Gaga (or the subject of the song) is in a relationship with other men (Fernando, Roberto) and she is hiding it from Alejandro out of fear of shame or because she thinks he will leave her but she also feels guilt about it (And she won't look at you, won't look at you) and also she is playing him and lying to him about it (She's got a halo around her finger, around you).

You know that I love you, boy
Hot like Mexico, rejoice
At this point I gotta choose, nothing to lose

Don't call my name, don't call my name
Alejandro
I'm not your babe, I'm not your babe
Fernando
Don't wanna kiss, don't wanna touch
Just smoke my cigarette and hush
Don't call my name, don't call my name
Roberto

Alejandro, Alejandro
Ale-Alejandro, Ale-Alejandro
Alejandro, Alejandro
Ale-Alejandro, Ale-Alejandro

Stop, please
Just let me go
Alejandro, just let me go

Here she says she has to choose between the men she is with and expresses the tension and push and pull she feels whilst being with all 3 of them at the same time. She also suggests for Alejandro to end things with her to make it easier for her as well.

She's not broken, she's just a baby
But her boyfriend's like a dad, just like her dad
And all those flames that burned before him
Now he's gotta firefight, gotta cool the bad

Here she reveals that the reason she is with multiple men at the same time is because she has daddy issues and that the next lover who comes along after Alejandro will have to deal with and help fix her baggage she has in her relationships with men.

One of my favorite aspects of TFM is Gaga taking these fears/themes (fear of self, addiction, men, sex, death etc) and turning them into stories with rich meaning which Alejandro is no exception and obviously some songs are more fleshed out with the storytelling than others or go more in depth but it is still fun to analyze them. Alejandro is still one of my favs from TFM and I love her vocals on it too, great song.

Interesting analysis! I read this part differently though. I think she’s hiding her hands out of fear of commitment, the halo being a potential wedding ring, because she knows she gets attached too fast. That would make the song about being pursued by a lot of men while not being ready to fall for any of them, as a way of protecting herself after past trauma. That idea comes back in the lines right after:

She's not broken, she's just a baby
But her boyfriend's like a dad, just like her dad
And all those flames that burned before him
Now he's gotta firefight, gotta cool the bad

meaning the potential interest has to tame her from her fears before she's ready to be loved, as you said

and

Stop, please
Just let me go
Alejandro, just let me go

representing her plea to be left alone with her demons. I think it's not that she has to choose between them, it’s that she is being tempted to fall and isn’t ready for any of it because she knows they will hurt her.

Then “don’t wanna kiss, don’t wanna touch, just smoke my cigarette and hush” really sells it for me. She’s shutting the door on any kind of contact, hiding behind her cigarette, which works as a coping mechanism for solitude here.

because she has daddy issues and that

So this confirms Gaga has daddy issues too? :gum: And that’s why she only ever dates daddies?

Girl we been knew, she has dated several “father figures” and her fiancé and the father of her child looks like a young version of her dad. Not to mention she is a self professed daddy’s girl and made Joanne (the song) for him. Luc Carl and DaDa are probably the only guys she’s dates who don’t bare some resemblance to her dad. Even Taylor Kinney kind of did.

I initially thought this was the meaning too and I can definitely still read it that way but I think the part that supports my reading is the chorus mostly but again yes it could be either one.
