People are commenting here about 'gay characters' as if being gay is always the entirety of the character, but the truth is that in all cases there will be more to the character than being gay (just like real people). Yes, in many cases being gay is likely to be a crucial feature of the character, but in other cases it might be less important.

Separate point, if you're casting a movie you'll probably want to factor in box office. Take HOG for example. That was a movie about Italian people living in Italy, but instead of shooting it with Italian actors speaking Italian they shot it with a bunch of American actors pretending to be Italian people speaking English with Italian accents. That allowed them to hire Gaga, Adam, Al and Jared and so the movie did well at the box office.

They should but let's not pretend Hollywood is treating gay people the same way. It's a difficult one because an openly gay actor in Hollywood is going to get typecasted or excluded from the typical 'straight' roles. Not all the time and it's getting better for sure but It's still pretty prevalent so you end up with the gay people kind of needing those gay roles.

It's not that straight people shouldn't take gay roles, It's that their taking roles period from gay actors with how Hollywood is run.

You're assuming that gay actors would get straight roles if the movement was less pronounced. Not really, no. The straight roles would in fact go to straight actors. The movement sort of guarantees a portion for gay actors. It gives them work, not takes it away from them.

That's because gay actors are not given roles that are radically outside their real life experiences.

Straight actors get to transform radically both in physical appearance and personality. Gaga gets to play a murderess and a clown, Christian Bale has literally acted as everything. Are gay actors offered the same range? If not, then is it fair we say 'they are just acting as themselves all the time'?

Saying gay men should only be portrayed by gay men implies that there is a gay way to behave as if it was a personality trait, which is bullshit. Being gay means you like to have sex with men, it doesn't imply you behave in a more "feminine" way. Am I for gay actors being cast more frequently? Yes. But that doesn't mean that casting a straight to play a gay character is in the same level of white washing.

For me, it is certainly refreshing to know that there are serious straight actors that are not afraid to play a gay role. I feel like it shows that there is a progression of acceptance and breaking of stereotypes for most of the instances that I have seen a straight actor play a gay character as of recently. of Straight or gay generally speaking for a lot of roles this is just a part of the storytelling not necessarily a main focus just like for Brokeback Mountain, to be played by mainstream successful straight men, playing in a movie such as that there had to of been fear of backlash or judgment, so I commend them for taking the role and doing it justice. Also, their big names likely garnished some straights to be like “well, it has Heath Ledger” I guess I can give it a go” then the gay agenda struck and they became more of an ally from that beautiful and emotional movie.

Neil Patrick Harris, Matt Bomer, Cynthia Nixon, Wentworth Miller, Portia de Rossi, Jodie Foster, Luke Evans and the list goes on and on all played straight characters in the last 20 years, Niel role as Barney had a big impact in accepting LGBTQ+ actors in general and accepting LGBTQ+ actors in roles of straights.

i don't see a problem with straight actors playing gay roles UNLESS it's a straight actor playing a gay role that's intended to offend and reinforce harmful stereotypes
