Twitter Has Stopped Paying Its Amazon Web Services & Google Cloud Bills

Twitter has refused to pay its Google Cloud bills as its contract comes up for renewal this month, Platformer has learned, leading to a high-stakes conflict between the companies that could result in Twitter’s trust and safety teams being crippled.

While Twitter hosts some services on its own servers, the company has long contracted with Google and Amazon to complement its infrastructure. Prior to Musk buying Twitter last year, the company signed a multi-year contract with Google to host services related to fighting spam, removing child sexual abuse material, and protecting accounts, among other things.

Twitter has been trying to renegotiate its contract with Google since at least March, the Information reported that month. It had also delayed payments to Amazon Web Services, leading the company to threaten withholding advertising payments. 

According to The Information's report, Twitter had ultimately continued to pay its Google Cloud bills because of the huge advertising revenue it gets from the company – but Platformer now reports that "at some point" it changed its mind and stopped paying the invoices, and was now planning to stop using the platform completely.

Platformer reported that Twitter was scrambling to move services off Google Cloud before the contract ends on June 30, but cited sources who said that this was taking longer than expected and that it was uncertain what would happen with some of the services.

For example, it's unclear whether Twitter would try to migrate Smyte to its own servers, sources told Platformer.

Smyte, a company Twitter acquired in 2018that provides tools to stop harassment, abuse, and spam, is hosted on Google Cloud Platform and is now set to be shut down at the end of the month, Platformer reported.

Rumored to launch this summer and it briefly appeared on Google playstore yesterday. My guess is their going to try launch asap to capitalize on this Twitter shitstorm. Some screenshots before it got taken down.

No shade but im surprised y’all are rooting for Meta to dethrone Twitter. Do we really want one company to have 3 dominant platforms when so much of our social life, politics, new consumption, consumerism/etc exists on social media? Idk idk

Probably not but my 2023 New Years Resolution was to take Twitter from Elon so this helps with that
