The aesthetic, beat, tempo, choreography, fashion slayed beyond transcendence of pop culture history. It debuted in Times Square. There is literally video of people screaming at the top of their lungs watching this for the first time in time square. This is my favorite music videos of hers and the VMA performance of this song! EFFING SLAPS!!!!!!!!!! I remember when this leaked and the pandemonium that set off when she released it a week early. I was at work and literally told my boss I had a family emergency so I could go home to listen to the song because I had a flip phone at the time and couldn’t stream music. What's disgusting is I remember fans back then absolutely shitting all over Applause. Saying it was her worst lead single, the 'beginning of the end' for the era, a bad pop song, hated the video, any other song should have been the lead etc. In hindsight I cannot believe it. We’ve never heard that there was an original concept or that anything changed because of this, just that it had to be planned and filmed in a week The stuff about the original VMAs performance, however, was pretty much confirmed. It was too big budget and ambitious and they wanted to make sure the focus and resources that year went to Miley.
