A city near Detroit has banned its residents from displaying LGBTQ flags on public property after a raucous city meeting Tuesday.

Hamtramck, Mich., an enclave within north-central Detroit, banned the flags in a unanimous vote with one city council member arguing that the displays are unnecessary.

“You guys are welcome,” council member Nayeem Choudhury said, referring to the LGBTQ community and its supporters. “(But) why do you have to have the flag shown on government property to be represented?”

“You’re already represented,” he added. “We already know who you are.”

The city’s five council members and mayor are all Muslim, as are about half of the city’s residents, according to the Detroit Free Press. The latest census also showed that around 40 percent of the city’s residents are immigrants.

“We want to respect the religious rights of our citizens,” Choudhury said.

The city, as a result of the vote, will only allow flags of the nations that represent the city’s immigrant heritage and the flag of Michigan to be flown. The city’s previous mayor flew the Pride flag from City Hall in 2021, causing a controversy in the community and making it a campaign issue for the newly elected Mayor Amer Ghalib.

“We serve everybody equally with no discrimination but without favoritism,” Ghalib said.

my city did this years ago too. It's so maddening. I don't care if you fly a pride flag. But having a vote on making sure it never happens is so EXTRA.

My home state. Disgusting.

this is exactly why we have pride.  Because straight ppl still can’t stand us and don’t want to normalize our existence. They want to erase us

It's happening all over the world (I just talked about it in the Elon Musk thread) and very quickly too. And we are here doing absolutely nothing while they are ripping off every right we conquered during the last decades.

Why do you need American flags on American soil? You already know you're American :max:

Why do Catholic people always have crucifixes everywhere? Will they otherwise not remember Jesus Christ, their lord and savior? :koons:

This is really sad for any LGBTQ people who live there but honestly Hamtramck is a nasty place to have to live anyways. Racism, Islamophobia, poor sanitation, horrible leaders, religious ruling etc have driven what little community it had to the ground so this decision isn’t surprising at all. The old leaders who left or were ousted were just replaced with people who rule based on their own religious opinions. The cycle just continues.

Even tho my city is technically in Florida, it’s 150+ miles from the mainland on a remote island and it’s so anti-Florida. We have the state’s first openly lesbian mayor, and multiple pride flags fly at our city hall at all times. Our city commissioners recently made a public statement directly accepting and welcoming all genders, sexualities, religions, etc to distance ourself from Florida. Rainbow crosswalks, all variations of pride flags are hung on city lamp posts all the way down the main road. City vehicles get changed for pride, and all local government and services participate in pride. We have vast LGBTQIA+ resources and community outreach programs, and inclusivity and diversity are proudly taught in schools—and banned books are encouraged to be read in schools here as well. It’s honestly one of the safest, most accepting cities in the nation for people like us (and everyone else) and I’m so proud of it.

Human rights > Religion

Banning pride flags from public property is a slippery slope and a pretty obvious red flag with how things are currently going in the US.

With the rise of hate crimes against Jews and Muslims, can they put their flag in public property because its a human right issue?

Its a slippery slope to allow social activism flags on public property, unless it represents an actual law or bill, and is already part of government.

If you allow Pride flags, you will eventually see Blue Lives Matter flags everywhere too!

"We want to respect the religious rights of our constituents" - Bro, you realize that making a religiously motivated decision like that is a violation of the anti-establishment clause, right?

We have forgotten our public MANNERS
