SevenWonder 3,713 Posted June 20, 2023 Share Posted June 20, 2023 Abel comes across so horrible in this - and I know he's supposed to be a Svengali villain type - that I wonder if this will hurt his career? It's hard not to assume the real Abel is like his character - even if that's not fair or accurate. He's truly plays the worst possible villain: He's without charm, wit, charisma, a hidden likability or any hidden motive for his evil. It's shockingly one note. His performance is also a not so gentle reminder that good acting is an actual skill. He's so bad it's almost laughable. (Btw, I love The Weeknd as a pop star and was looking forward to this.) I think all the characters and actors are good , The Weeknd is not even THAT bad- I just feel like the script/plot is lacking so they’re bloating the scenes with drawn out slow motion montages to look edge and use up time. The guy is a narcissist, manipulative cult leader - and Abel is doing a pretty good job for a newbie actor. Go into it with no expectations. It's not horrible, but not brilliant either.
