Kim Petras album reviews

Pitchfork: 4.3   - Across her latest album, the pop star’s high-octane, inoffensive dance-pop plays it way too safe and never really finds a point of view.

The Guardian: 2/5 If only the music on her major label debut album was as interesting and innovative as its author is, or even as diverting as Unholy.

3/5 Kim Petras: Feed the Beast review – hyperpop debut misses the mark.

The German star’s debut is too reminiscent of others, but there are still moments of brilliance.

Everything I drop is a banger,” states Kim on Uhoh, a glittery, disco-tinged strut situated midway through her debut album.
While it’s not an untrue statement – early singles Heart to Break and Malibu, both the work of controversial producer Dr Luke, definitely bang – actual hits had been conspicuous by their absence.
That all changed last year with Unholy. Unholy appears on Feed the Beast as a bonus track, its mix of Sophie-esque experimentation and pop nous showing up some of the album’s lesser moments.

It’s not that meticulously polished songs such as King of Hearts, Revelations or Alone are bad, more that they instantly remind you of the work of other pop stars, be it Ava Max, Lady Gaga or Charli XCX.

Static where it should be elastic, brash instead of bold, the hyperpop-adjacent maelstrom often smothers Kim’s personality.

There are flashes of pure pop ecstasy (Claws, Minute).

Overall, though, Feed the Beast feels rushed and already a little stale.

So to sum it up: if you love pop music and enjoyed the snippets she played, you’ll love this record

This feels half baked. It feels like it's, the tracklist tells it's. At first, I think the title-track, KOH, and uhoh are great pop tunes. But after some listening, I found that all of them sounded rushed. The auto-tuned used to be the pizzazz of her hyper-vocal style, now they just checkmarked the list of "what stuff does rainbow ATMs like?".

Alone 2.0 is superior than 1.0, but throwing a basic dance beat around to replace a basic trap beat just won't fix anything.

That being said, I still got a handful of tracks to enjoy. Claws and Castle in the Sky are perfection to me. She sounds right, the beat's tight, it's also FIT the vibe of the title "Feed the Beast". Therefore, there's no doubt that I would like Revelations and Hit It From the Back. Though I was skeptical when Brrr released, now it feels like a proper cold ending for this record.

Also this is not hyperpop! nerd-emoji.jpg

Definitely an album of the year for me… 4.9/5 from me… would be 5/5 but she’s cut out 30 mins of Hit It From The Back! There’s no skips and everything is a banger :D bring on the vinyls!!

Scare them first, so they can’t scare you...

How can you see that it's hyperpop(esque) and then shoot it down for referencing other pop sounds. That's like the whole idea behind the genre

So she took forever to make this 'debut' even though she has several other albums out and this critic describes it as 'rushed'?? Ouch.

Mr Peeps

I will always be a hater as long as she works with the people she surrounds herself with so ofc i'm biased

but yeah it misses the mark, there really is a significant drop in quality when you compare it to her previous bodies of work she released but was too scared to call a debut album

I can't believe she didn't release All She Wants, it's really one of the best pop songs I heard in the last 5 years

I wouldn’t call it hyperpop personally. It’s just dance pop at most. That’s not a bad thing. If anything this review is just once again showing that nobody can agree on what exactly is hyperpop.
