Unpopular opinion: ARTPOP (2023)

It is nowhere even close to being as intelligent, forward thinking, innovative, or artistically deep as many fans and even Gaga herself at the time present it as.

I think the fans overhype the album too much, in a way that it makes it seem like it's her best album. I like the chaotic style and imagery of the album, but I feel like it's also all over the place. I also think that Dope is such a downer for an album that circles around "pain exploding in electronic music", Chromatica could have been the album with a ballad, and ARTPOP could have had none.  AND if the label wanted Gaga to release a ballad, they should've had done that c. 2009/10 and released Speechless as a single.

i don't think gaga hates this album as much as everyone thinks she does

I don't think she hates it but I think she goes out of her way to avoid it. She never plays any of the songs anymore. I'm not gonna lie I didn't have the privilege of seeing JWT or Engima, but based on Super Bowl and TCB the album doesn't exist.

It’s not a masterpiece by any means but it still holds up well. Applause, DWUW (with Xtina), G.U.Y, Gypsy are some of her best songs.

It was dated on arrival but is still very fun and enjoyable to listen to

Applause & G.U.Y An ARTPOP Film are criminally underrated and deserve to be one of the highest rated MV’s. They’re masterpieces and some of the best by any pop star ever

Applause is her catchiest song ever

Dope is underrated, unnecessary hated and has some of her best lyrics of all time. The verses are literal poetic masterpieces!

ARTPOP (song) is in my top 5 Fav Gaga songs

I used to love Gypsy, but the studio version just makes me cringe nowadays :cryga: idk why, something about the chorus instrumentation. Love the bridge tho

Life has a hopeful undertone |-/

I love Jewels and Drugs and its one of my favorites on the album.
Fashion! is one of the best songs on this album, in composition, lyrics and production.
Donatella and Mary Jane Holland are instant skips.
Dope is one of her absolute best ballads with the most impressive vocals and most vulnerable lyrics. Also one of the best songs on the record.

My favorite part of the album is Do What U Want -> ARTPOP -> Swine. Great workout songs.

Every album up until this point had been better than the previous one (TF/TFM/BTW). ARTPOP is the first Gaga album that made me feel disappointed because it was a step back. I still forced myself to like it and I do love it now but it took a while.

Jewels, Manicure, Donatella and Gypsy are ok songs but sometimes I just have to skip them.

Other than JWT and Enigma she played two deep cuts in her Coachella set, which had a super mashup of more ARTPOP material as an intro. She's not avoiding it at all and I'm sure she will perform more of it in future tours, just like Alejandro and Paparazzi were cut from TCB but will come back :)

The ones who hate this album…how do you call yourselves true Little Monsters?? This album is camp and is Lady Gaga at some of her best. Aura through Sexxx Dreams is a legendary track run. Jewels N’ Drugs took some time to click, but it’s a fun song and nowhere near as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Manicure was the rock Gaga everyone had been and still is asking for. ARTPOP title track…don’t even need to say much - it’s iconic and still stuck in your heads to this day. Swine through Fashion - absolute queer bangers. Mary Jane Holland through Gypsy - shows Gaga’s struggles with fame and how she copes with it and is so beautifully written and presented. And then ending on Applause where, after everything stated in the previous songs, she takes back to the stage because it’s where she loves to be. ARTPOP is a legendary album and true Little Monsters get that.

I totally get the concept she has for it sonically but thematically…an Amazon reviewer did it better by saying it takes you through suites of obsessions. Sexual, material, all that. I wish Gaga would have dropped the art talk and just gone into those early inspos like she talked about at the BTWB (an album without responsibility). It was kinda her Melodrama album. Hedonism and ****ery then reckoning with the self but she wanted to call it something else. Idk I think ARTPOP was all about the marketing and she sold it oddly. The title is good for the album, though! But relate it back to the actual concepts running through the album.

Venus is GOAT and she needs more rough demo-y releases.

her cleanest production hands down. It’s really really well done.

Swine is kinda crap and the bass levels were a choice. Needed to be more ferocious.

Instead of Act II she should have done SoundCloud drops with stuff like brooklyn nights. Great song, doesn’t really fit the album which actually does have a tight concept despite its explorations.

why didn’t she do more club work with this album? Remixes, club nights, ANYTHING. The marketing of this kinda writes itself and Troy leaving her is the reason, I get it, but oy there were some GREAT marketing opps she missed on that would have buoyed the album but I know she was onto jazz by then (two eras I adored coinciding tbh; do that again gagaloo; it was awesome).

ARTPOP isn’t too “overhyped” as most say. That album is a MASTERPIECE always has been, always will be! If anything it’s underhyped  in the fanbase. :grr:

I don't like Christina on DWUW. Love the song though.

After those leaked document, we could see 5he reason of their choices. We know Gaga was going through a difficult time emotionally, physically, mentally before and during this era. Unfortunately, she didn't have a lot of support which made things worse.

ARTPOP is known to some as a commercial failure or the outdated album but I applaud her for continuing her vision of ARTPOP.

Almost 10 years later and we are still having the same chaotic debate.:firega:
