3 Toronto Suburb cities that share a regional government under "Peel Region" will discover and each city will now run their own policing, school boards, garbage collection, water and public transit without shared responsibilities.

 

The cities in question are:

 

Mississauga: 850,000+ people

Brampton: 650,000+ people

Caledon: under 70,000 people

 

 

Mississauga is Toronto's Largest Suburb and Brampton the 2nd largest. For many years critics have complained the cities have grown too large to still be connected in services and that a split should have happened a long time ago. The Province has finally approved the split

I live in Brampton btw but after being in this city since 2005 (18 years) that nobody likes and is the laughing stock of the Toronto metro... I'm upgrading to Mississauga this fall and moving in with my GF who lives in Mississauga ...

 

But works for the city of Brampton

Brampton was the worst (I stayed there for some time and the public transportation is just bad)

I myself don't have a strong opinion on it as I haven't done some kind of deep analysis study on its pros and cons and have too much superficial knowledge on the issue

 

I do know that cities the size of Mississauga and Brampton typically have their own service sector and are not combined together for it

 

Caledon is a little small and spread out tho and I feel like they gonna struggle

I don’t have a strong opinion either, bc idk what this means and don’t really trust anything Ford says… but if Hazel and Crombie want it… then maybe it’s not that terrible? Apparently this means higher property taxes, but also this allows some red tape behind building housing and transportation to vanish (nice to see) and critical infrastructures like water treatment will still be shared and hopefully the police and ambulances will still operate the same.

1.5 years to undo 50 years of collaboration… I don’t envy city officials right now.

I don't necessarily hate on something just cuz Ford said it (that's called splitting) and I'm not gonna be for something just cuz Hazel was for it (no one is perfect or right all the time)

 

I'm sure theres a lot of pros and cons to this.

 

I know one thing that's a big thing in Brampton is that mayor Patrick brown wants compensation from Mississauga because a disproportionate amount of the infrastructure and facilities for the services that are shared were built in Mississauga and if each city splits Mississauga will keep them even tho all cities contributed to paying for it (for example water treatment plants are in Mississauga)

 

I don't know all the details of it and what's a reasonable amount but on the surface it sounds like a valid point
