You have to realize, this is not some cute school project that only need positivity and good intention to thrive. This is still a business in the end. This is not just an entertainment. Kesha didn't just sing, this is her career, her day job. When labels signed a contract with an artist, they wanted to make money, and big money only came from big hits. A concept right?

Without hits, artists does not have selling point, not profitable, and might not able to put out more albums, cos investing in someone's new album are expensive, and the labels will want to at least break even, if not making profits off it. When they didn't get either, they won't invest more cos what good does it do when they'll only losing money? That's something you'd try to avoid when you do any kind of business.

When this happens, labels will either put the artist in endless delays/hiatus, or straight out firing them off the roster.

As in in Kesha case, though, no major labels might want to sign her, now that she is free agent, if her last few songs and albums performances are not promising enough for them. Hit songs are like the shiny parts in your resume when you go seeking new office to work at.

You’re right, then again. I wonder how many people complaining about success have that perception in mind and how many of them just want to boost their ego up.
