Nothing ever embeds properly on here, no offence mods lol. Still this is a really dope article on the album you know and love aka ARTPOP.

Never heard bout this bit tbh -

“[The album] was created from the brain of Lady Gaga, and she’s never been one to go for the obvious or what’s easy or for something that might not be as worthwhile,” Monson said. “We were really going for the craziest kind of stuff that we could come up with.” The record was written while Gaga and her collaborators toured the world, going from a four-day South African safari to Bueno Aires with the singer’s parents to freezing temperatures in Norway. That whirlwind extended to her approach in the studio. “I remember the musicians coming in and the directions she was giving them: asking the guitar player to play violent, or play like you’re on a beach with bombs coming out of the sky,” Monson said. He recalled creating “Venus” in the back room of Los Angeles’s Record Plant “from the bottom up,” blasting its beat at deafening volumes over two sleepless nights. “She worked on the bassline for hours and hours because she wanted to get it completely right,” he said. “It was full mermaid, full strobe light, full technicolor in the studio.”

i dont think it was misunderstood

i think it got the reception it deserved. somewhat beloved and appreciated by fans, tough to stand up to the fame monster/born this way, a bit off putting because of its self-indulgence (which in contrast the fans enjoy)

Its my favorite album by Gaga, but I dont think it was misunderstood. It would still not do good if it was released today.

Honestly, I think songs like "Sexxx Dreams", "MANiCURe", "ARTPOP" etc would do wonders if released today. Many tracks from that album could easily fit in with the hyperpop/electronica crowd.

But the hyperpop/electronica sound isnt mainstream. Thats why artists like Charlie XCX is struggling to reach mainstream, even when she released a more pop sound album.

I suppose, but the more weirder, experimental, hyperactive sounds are lot more appreciated these days, least in Aus/UK they are

True—music definitely has room to add flourishes of weird today

It was truly misunderstood at its time, and even now I think people giving retroactive praise miss much of the album’s true impact as a collective art piece. ARTPOP is so much more than the experimental sounds and beats—it was about the entirety of the concept, the deeply personal, high art references, performance art exhibitions,  the work behind the scenes with artists like Koons. The album artwork and ARTPOP release party in and of themselves demand recognition for the processes of creation and execution alone. ARTPOP leaves artistic interpretation to be had around every corner, even all these years later. And, perhaps most critically, it was a Renaissance painting in terms of the trauma and drama Gaga was experiencing in the background through it all. It’s like she was literally crafting museum-worthy art exhibitions through every medium all at once, as the sources of her artistic trauma happened in real time. It was, and is, an exceptional body of work—but the music is only a sliver of what truly makes it so magnanimous.

I don't think ARTPOP will ever truly be mainstream, and that's perfectly fine. It doesn't take away the quality of the album or how I personally perceive it.
