It is such a personal song for Gaga, but it doesnt relate that much to the GP. Even the song title does not ring a bell at first, from the GP perspective. And the intro which seems like electro church organ sounds irks religious people, reminds them of Judas song. And yes, the video was too long and confusing for them.

For me It should have been Hair, as the last single. But i know Gaga wanted this as a single, she even directed the video.

I agree with all the reasons mentioned since I witnessed first hand how the single bombed on all metrics. :air: The song had so much promo in 2011.

Born This Way era alienated so many people in 2011 but now it’s getting more love and attention:

- Judas is the 2nd most streamed song off BTW daily and had a viral Tik Tok moment

- Bloody Mary is the 6th single, and had a viral moment that pushed its success in streaming and radio

- Americano and Government Hooker went semi-viral and are doing between 80k - 90k daily streams

Unfortunately, this didn’t translate into  Marry the Night as it is her 2nd lowest streamed single on a daily basis (with Perfect Illusion being #1 :air: ). Even the MV is struggling to reach 100M and is predicted to do so in July 2024.

It certainly is a fan favorite and hopefully she will perform it again. The last live performance of it was 2013. 💀

On the plus side, it is Platinum in the US.

So overall, people probably just listened to it and had no interest in listening again.

She was too overexposed. Radio stations actually tweeted in response to fans that said she wasn't played enough anymore. They said that she was too overexposed and didn't want play her. So Marry The Night didn't get the radio promo that it needed because radio stations didn't want to play it.

The music video and the Ellen performance for this song really made me fall in love with it all over again

MTN was played all over radio around Christmas 2011. I remember Christmas shopping and hearing it on the radio every hour in the car

King of the Fall

She had reached a point of success where the only way forward was down for a time. She was overexposed and these issues predated the release of ARTPOP. A step back was precisely what was needed. When we talk about Gaga's flop era I think its important to keep in mind that this was only by her incredibly successful standards. Applause was a number 2 hit and ARTPOP sold a lot even if some people wanted to see her fall. She has recovered very well since then and much faster than many fans thought she would.

Hey, I'm king of the world, you ought to hear my song, you come on measure me, I'm twenty inches long

It’s my fave Gaga song of all time, firstly. It’s just pop perfection.

BTW ran out of steam in terms of single performance the minute they chose You & I as the 4th single. She was on a pop crusade with the first 3 singles - then she went epic rock ballad, and then went back to pop. It was weird, even from a Stan point of view. Let’s not forget the controversy re: BTW/Madonna, Judas being ‘blasphemy’, TEOG video issue etc.. I recall her becoming just too over exposed during that era. The media scrutinized her every move, she was also really heavy on promo back then. Don’t get me wrong, she was at the peak of her fame then, & I LIVED for it. I just think she intended on polarizing people back then, & that’s why the 5th single (it could’ve been any song) didn’t work. People were over it, to put it simply.

I wish Gaga would bring back Marry The Night to her live shows though. Even if it wasn't a huge hit at the time, it's still a fan favourite and I would love to see her perform it live again.

It was rehearsed for Coachella! She ended up not performing it for some reason
