Excuse me, you forgot what Britney did for Vegas! And Gaga learned from that.

I'm a Britney fan, so don't get me wrong but Britney's residency was kind of the prime example for a career’s graveyard

Maybe idk? Britney is incredible of course and her residency was top tier but did she make it hype again? Idk I’m young, all I know is that when it was announced that Gaga was going the vegas route everybody was like « well her career is officially post-prime, that’s the usual route for fading popstars » (nicely put) and, after her residency, nobody would say that about an artist based on a vegas residency alone (eg. about Adele)

If I’m not wrong Britney was one of the dead ones because she did Vegas residency.

Britney was one of the first big popstars of her gen to go to Vegas. That quickly attracted younger audiences and then brought more younger artists to capitalize on these demo changes. Technically Britney was later in her career, but if she wouldn't have gone I don't think artists like Gaga or Katy would have considered it.

No doubt about that, that doesn’t change the fact that in 2017 people saw vegas residency as retirement homes, which isn’t the case anymore, and that’s on gaga not on Britney

this perspective was biased of course, not disputing that, just saying Gaga changed it

I love how everyone was like ‘Vegas is for retirement’ then Gaga brought her show there and everyone started doing residencies. Queen of starting trends:vegas:

Imo it went :

Completely cheesy till a still quite young Celine Dion made it a possible option for acts who weren't seniors and not an automatic career ending move.

Then still cooler after Britney's one and more or less okay for young acts.

And finally definitely not a decline sign after Gaga to the point no one think this way anymore.

I wonder if she's doing a 2023 Vegas leg. I need a new pop show, and also the jazz show needs to come back!!

If you have some rad remixes you made laying around, send it to me!!

I think it is quite biased lol which is fine. You originally said that Gaga made it hype again, which she definitely added to it. I just wouldn’t say she created that hype at all. Residency’s were not looked at like that in 2017 (maybe by you) and there are countless articles about the revitalization of Vegas in the mid 2010s which included new casinos and hotels, renovated older ones, new restaurants and tourist spots. Britney announced hers I believe in 2013, so that had an undeniable effect on all of that. Artists like Britney, Cher and Celine are synonymous with residencies now. Gaga isn’t, which many of her fans wouldn’t want her to be anyways. So I think it would be silly to credit her with changing this whole concept. This stat is just about how much she sold anyways, which will be different based on price point and amount of shows. Connecting that to impact and influence would be difficult for me to rationalize with.

This. And then at the peak of #FreeBritney she released a single with Elton and it flopped. Her career went to Vegas to die

hmm, you should go back and find the announcement thread of gaga's vegas contract here. her own fanbase was rabidly tearing her apart and saying she's over and vegas confirms it, it was very bad

vegas was still considered the career graveyard when gaga announced her :traumatica:

mother, what must i do?

Again, I think this is what is what we don't agree about. This website is not a representation of what the general population thinks. You may have felt that way about Gaga going there. I bet younger fans of artists like Billie, Olivia, Ariana etc still might think it means it's the end of their careers. Britney ushered in the era of artists in their 30s being presented with the possibility of going there without it looking weird career wise. It would not have been a viable option for Gaga had Britney not attracted a younger audience already.
