Scientists create mice egg cells from two male mice

The team, led by Katsuhiko Hayashi, a professor of genome biology at Osaka University in Japan, generated eggs from the skin cells of male mice that, when implanted in female mice, went on to produce healthy pups, according to research published March 15 in the peer-reviewed journal Nature.

It's fascinating that we've reached abilities as advanced as taking DNA from 2 males to create an offspring, that we can edit genes and alter our food, make new breeds etc.

 

Yet I also find it disturbing that we like to play God with nature this much

 

More often than not we end up f*cking something up

 

Ex: GMOs are harmless and will increase food yields etc blah blah blah... Decades later discover that GMO wheat has tougher gluten to digest than original wheat and causes all kinds of health problems for so many ppl particularly the ones sensitive to it forcing them to eat alternatives that sometimes have their own bad ingredients. Yay for progress

god i love science, of course people will always deem it playing god but we've been doing this for decades, gene editing is nothing new. cant wait to see where this goes like CRISPR. could eventually be the cure to so many diseases

I used to hope this would happen in my lifetime, but now that I’m actually at that age, I want nothing to do with kids

I have no issue with gene editing for medical purposes but they do need to proceed with caution and be certain of the effects they are gonna have.

 

Many genes affect other genes or have more than 1 affect. I can see a scenario where stuff starts to be edited to prevent something and inadvertently causes a different problem

 

Many medical drugs we only find out terrible effects many years if not decades later, something like gene editing we may not know until these children grow up
