Everyone in America behaves so vulgar, even Canadians ... and even Avril.

Why is Avril so indifferent to deforestation issues in Ontario =/

Trees are plants, are living beings, and cannot protest on their own.

What the activist did was great and courageous.

If I was on stage and famous, I'd have given this woman my microphone and let her briefly summarize her mission .

The government in Ontario want to remove a greenbelt outside of Toronto, their argument is to build houses, which is a huge problem here and they are overpriced due to low stock.

This woman doesn't want that to happen and decided to make her views known via her chest.

We have a lot of NIMBYism here. People want more immigration, more homes, more jobs, more transit but also don't want to sacrifice a portion of the environment to achieve that, which would be great ideally. But one or more of those realistically has to give for the rest to happen.

Unless people in this thread explained what she was protesting, I would have never actually known. And something like this only draws attention to the fact that her breasts were exposed and Avril flicked them, not the actual message of the protest.

What is going to happen if Ontario fulfills its plans?

Toronto, which already is very big, will even get bigger, denser, "crowd"ier and the consequence will be: it will attract even more people! It will result into a vicious cycle of ongoing population increase and ongoing deforestation and less greenbelts. The goal to make house prices more affordable is simply unachievable b/c the construction of new houses will make more people buy them and come, will create more jobs, more demands, it is a pull factor. Even worse: the greater Toronto becomes, the more horrifying will be house prices in central Toronto, the greater social unequality will become. The Ontario government is making false promises to the population, its plan only temporarily solves a problem, but creates new ones in the future.

Meanwhile, Atlantic Canada and rural parts are stagnating or depopulating.

What Canada needs to ensure is that people have more job opportunities in rural areas and that Toronto/Vancouver/Montréal/Ottawa/Edmonton/Calgary don't have a monopoly.

The population increase in Toronto comes at the expense of other parts in NA.

When Toronto will get it, and I suppose nothing will stop it, the consequence will be that Toronto becomes more attractive and the rural parts even less and more depopulated.... We will have a Canada where the typical inhabitant lives in a big city with few greenbelts in near area, while in the rural areas there will be no future. This will make people more disconnected with nature in the long run.

Yeah... I don't know how to judge the fact that this woman wanted to make it known via her chest but  --- would the world listen to her and give her attention if she didn't? would we be here if Lady Gaga didn't wear extravaganza outfits during The Fame era, would she ever become this famous? I think it is a legitimate way to make people aware of an issue.

Growing up in a rural area, I agree with most of your points. I don't Gaga would ever ruin an innocent person's performance to showcase her views though, that's the difference between her and this protestor.

This feels like an emotional protest rather than anything constructive.

New houses will temporarily curb demand but it won't stop it, which for most aspiring homeowners is a start. There's no real alternative to slowing house demand without curbing immigration, restricting movement/housing, or raising interest rates higher, which the federal government controls. These issues have plenty of other problems, like slowed immigration causing the population age faster and that'll worsen ongoing job and skill shortages.

The cost of living has already caused many newcomers to leave too, many of these issues are caused by having a lower population.

And even if we can encourage people leave Toronto and the GTA, they end up hiking property prices in other provinces and cities. COVID saw that happen and making it harder for locals to buy a home.

I don't think there's any political party in either government that's able to solve this challenge without hurting someone's needs. Or perhaps killing off the idea of home ownership and making it a novelty.

I don't disagree with you on the rural/urban divide. The challenge Canada has is that people generally want European standards of things like good transit and greenbelts, which tend to happen in smaller countries with high population density.

That's one of the greatest things of human beings, that not everyone behaves as you would :enigma:
