I think sometimes people around here who don’t remember BTW era see the huge numbers and think “everyone must have loved her!” But it wasn’t like that 😢. She was damagingly overexposed. Meanwhile ARTPOP’s “failure” is easier to see because of the drop in numbers, but I really only remember the KatyCats and other haters being all over that one. (Even though Prism only sold about a million more and 3/5 of its singles underperformed so it’s funny now). Hindsight about ARTPOP/Prism is so funny to look at now. Katy was hitting her highest peak, and Gaga fever was well passed simmering down. It just so happened that Roar and Applause just happened to intersect at the moment when their popularity hit the same level. It’s also easier to see ARTPOP as a miss-step because instead of easing up reigning it in, she doubled down and said a big “**** it let’s go as far as we can” (which is very noble of her). The Perception of her schtick (for lack of a better word) was so far from salvaging post Born This Way, whatever she released would have been seen as a failure To your point about Born This Way, it definitely was the first showings of a public that had seen too much of her antics.Post The Fame/The Fame Monster, she could have released an album of fart sounds and it would have shot to the top of the charts either way. She accumulated so much power that it was impossible for it to fail/she released a really good album. Whatever Gaga does during an albums cycle is what influences critical and commercial reception for her next album cycle.

Time’s been a bit kinder to Judas, methinks

TFM was huge bc it was primed to be (and was good lol), BTW (song) was huge bc TFM was even bigger than TF and kept the hype, but she’d been dropping single after single for the past 3 years and while they were good, they’re pop. Tastes are fickle. And BTW was a little weirder than what she’d been doing on the priors and the era started performing worse and worse. ARTPOP was always going to be a bit underwhelming commercially. By contrast, chromatica was a decent hit (by Gaga standards lol) bc ASIB was and people were reminded of how awesome she is. We were so smug from the Asian legs and the Australian legs.. Honestly we were so smug in general. Even when she changed venues in Bulgaria I was so delulu that it wasn’t a flop. Tastes are fickle is the perfect way to put it, especially with pop. If Gaga released Joanne after Born This Way, reception would have been tepid as well. Cheek to Cheek was kind of an emergency parachute to slow the fall, and The Sound of Music, Super Bowl National Anthem were the landings to the ground that perfectly she stuck. Once she was firmly planted on the ground she was able grow and relaunch again with Joanne.

Once she was firmly planted on the ground with Joanne she was able to grow again That’s why the tour was mostly a greatest hits tour Joanne, while I’m sure meaningful to Gaga in its own way, was also a very strategic album especially coming out of the ASIB sessions (basically). Like she even wanted to go MORE folk but Interscope tapped Bloodpop to soften the genre lean a bit plus all those additional writers brought in. Now, I’m no snob and have no issue with writers on an album *but for a Gaga album and one that supposedly personal (places where she tends to be the solo writer on albums), it was kinda telling to me. I still like Joanne a lot but it was very very curated and strategic and tbh I think we all kinda know that in hindsight and some of us even then lmao

I think Tony Bennet said in an interview something along the lines of 'Gaga knows what to do' meaning career wise. She really is a master of fame. TEANUS 14,991
When BR debuted modestly, prior to the music video and its blow up Judas’ underperformance BTWB’s hit or miss success in Latin America Applause ‘failing’ to debut or peak at number one, especially with comparisons to Roar SXSW made me think she would never release a ‘pop’ album again Perfect Illusion and Million Reasons (initially) failing to reach the top 10 British social ladies with upturned pinkies, glasses clinking // xoxoTEANUS
