this research has been around for more than 20 years tbh but they always failed, when I did my master is zoo-archeology I was part of a research group with a similar goal and while I was there to study and help, the whole experience was pretty amazing, unfortunately, like with every attempt in the pst, the fetus died after a couple of days.

Also the common conclusion is that the climate right now is too hot for the woolly mammoth.

I was going to comment this,too.

I also doubt it's a good idea to reintroduce artic mega fauna when already the environment for existing fauna is shrinking rabidly (due to climate change, human influence). Just look at how it's going for polar beers.

Didn't they go extinct because of the rise of temperatures in the first place?  like we're really bringing them back to live the same thing?

Not to crush anyone's dreams but this is not likely and there's a more sinister impact of this.

This is a PR/funding grab for the startup trying to do this. And once they've succeeded eventually, they'll be able to sell the IP. It's a pure profit making scheme with little scientific benefit.

Plus it wouldn't even be a true wooly mammoth, just a genome edited African elephant embryo transplanted into a female.

It'll take potentially hundreds of elephants to get the abdominal surgery right for this transplant. It's going to put elephant safety at risk and injure/kill a lot of them.

This exactly. Elephants are hard enough to breed on their own. Their populations are drastically plummeting…it is possible that we could see them go extinct in the wild within our lifetime. How about research to save the species we still have before bringing anyone back?

Their population isn’t declining just because of poachers. It’s a huge aspect, yes. But the issue needs funding in general. Conservation efforts to preserve elephant populations need research and funding to gain the community’s support in saving the species.

Elephant herds passing through can be devastating to communities which creates a culture that perceives elephants as pests…destroying crops, fencing, injuries and fatalities, etc. It’s very much a socioeconomic issue. Working with the people who are directly impacted by elephants can help find solutions to live compatibly. 

Plus research to create sustainable populations in human care is really important for the species future. Performing research on endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV) and coming up with a cure could really help the species as well.
