vanna shintuyu 10,876
watched this earlier with some family. it was super intense. Katy headbanged too hard during the previous audition and one of her weave tracks flew out so they put it on luke and lionel to give them mullets. it was all laughs. they did a montage of a bunch of contestants with mullets throughout the day, mildly roasting them. then segued to him showing off his mullet and they talked about how he works at a mattress store and has to answer questions about the best mattresses for sex when people ask about that sort of thing. more laughs. then he sings and sounds like chris stapleton so they're blown away. then this happened and it was seriously such a gut punch. we were all teary-eyed. it's so devastating. especially since this still happens to this day when he's talking about something that happened years ago. ARTFAP 1,251
i really do believe that there should be a GUN REGULATION in the U.S and secondly THE MEDIA SHOULD NOT NAME DROP or GLORIFY a school shooter when reporting as if they were a celebrity, reporting about their childhood and what led to the incident..IT SHOULD BE ALWAYS FOCUS ON THE VICTIMS. because most of this school shooters are doing this for FAME and want to achieve the JEFFREY DAHMER status. im from a third world country RANDOM SCHOOL SHOOTING never happened here in my 27 years of existence. yes we have GUN VIOLENCE here like robber will point a GUN at you and will ask your belongings and thats it!..BUT THE CRIMINALS HERE NEVER WENT ON A.. "ooh let me kill some innocent children at a random school just because."
Bebe 17,106
I know I will get a lot of negative responses to this but I hate this kind of trauma p*rn I hate that this kids trauma is being used to entertain the public and make Katy and her fellow judges look good. This isn't helpful, this is just catering to the egos of the judges and public to make them feel like good people for feeling bad at this tragedy. Katy Perry, I'm sure, is an absolutely gorgeous person on the inside. I'm sure she is very empathetic and wants to do the right thing - but it's not brave to be upset over this. It doesn't make her a better person. There is no call to action after this clip, hopefully there is in the actual show. This is just Katy yelling that "This country has failed us!" and that he shouldn't have had to lose eight friends. It's simply American Idol exploiting this young man's traumatic experience for shock value, to trigger an emotional response with the audience and to humanise their judges and make them come across as more favourable to their audience. This isn't an attack on the judges, although I don't like that their emotional response became the central focus, it's an indictment of the producers more than anything. Gohan 16,513
I'm so sorry but that guy being all like Facts It's true I agree While Katy was literally having a meltdown on television just really took me out In all seriousness, this is like the first time I see a really important person on the spotlight talking about the gun issue in 'Murica tryna go ask Alice, tryna catch that rabbit
elijahfan 26,506
Right message, but not crazy about the sensationalism. It feels like Katy made it about herself, and tho I hope this wasn’t conscious on her part, it shifted the attention from that boy. This was his moment, not hers. Roughhouse Dandy 11,939
There are always complaints about "virtue signaling" any time anyone speaks up about problems like this, but if everyone who felt like Katy (especially those who have the platform she does) talked about it like this, change would come faster and easier. Whether or not she's giving "sensationalism" or "making it about her", I commend her for it. This is my Hannah Montana™️ lipgloss.

It really doesn’t feel like she did that… all she said was she’s scared too and then spent the most of time trashing America and saying it shouldn’t be like this. The only person shifting attention to Katy is OP?
JoeMo 3,889
I don't like the whole sensationalism accusations... she's clearly very passionate about this subject as are many Americans. She literally said how he should be singing because he loves music, it wasn't made about her. www.youtube.com/jmremixes

I think this was uncalled for, to the point she’s the one being comforted at the end… She’s not the one who lost 8 friends. There were ways to get the message across without making a spectacle out of it, this made me really uncomfortable. I’m not saying her reaction wasn’t genuine, but it was uncalled for. Now the headlines are about her.

It’s like a distant cousin crying louder than close family at a funeral. I thought the other judges’ reactions were measured and appropriate. I’m also not sure her reaction will actually change anything about the issue, let’s be real. Kids are being murdered with assault weapons and nothing changes, so what could a pop star crying and screaming on TV do…
nATAH 51,219
sorry but this felt weird... like really out of the blue and opportunistic... i've never known katy to advocate for gun control but i have seen her endorse that republican... mother, what must i do? At this point I’m not sure what would actually prompt any sort of change. As I said, kids are being slaughtered and things are still not moving. I know it sounds hopeless, but that’s how the situation feels.
