the way it's always people who don't actually listen to rap music who have this take. how can you reduce such a wide-ranging genre to this? and what kind of rap are you talking about? which language, even? French rap? Music out of Atlanta? Gangsta rap or cloud?

i'd love to know who your favorite rappers are and what gives you this impression. or whether it's just a throwaway comment informed by your already established perception of "rap" based off a few songs/artists rather than anything you really thought about meaningfully thought about.

i wanna push back on **** like this because it's a stigma that's hung around rap and hip hop since it was created and continues to be perpetuated, especially by people who don't even listen to the genre, and it ultimately just pollutes the discussion around the vibrant art that rappers put out there

At least Iggy has done a few videos since becoming famous that aren't showing off a boat or mansion like Sally Walker or Lola

He/She's probably talking about mainstream top 40 rap cuz I've noticed it too

 

There's seems to disproportionately be a huge amount of content visually and lyrically about flaunting their money or sex and that's even more prominent than in pop especially the flaunting wealth part

 

If ur talking about non mainstream American Rap I'm sure there's variety like in any other genre

 

But Iggy Azalea is part of mainstream American rap so I think it's safe to put her in the category of what the user was talking about (assuming they were talking about what I think they were talking about)

Is that not the entire Top 40? Throw in "love", along with money and sex, and that's like 99% of the Top 40. Just because some artists package their talk of sex/money/ego/etc. in innuendo doesn't mean the subject matter isn't any different.

Another thing is not all of this is literal. Rappers who can in no way be construed as wealthy still rap about the same thing. It's a confidence thing. Exaggeration and pomp is part and parcel of the genre.

Largely yes but like I said, I think it seems clear the rap portion of top 40 has it the most pronounced

 

Other genres like pop or country u will still get a few songs and videos about love or some other topic as well, or dancing etc

 

With rap that is like quite rare.

 

And then in the music videos definitely rap has it the most predominant I'd say
