Even days after being pulled out of the debris, the cat named Enkaz (‘wreck’) has not left the search and rescue team that saved it. “I see the sadness in this cat. I keep it by my side, especially in case the owner comes. We share everything we eat and drink here with Enkaz. We have been trying to find some clues from the cat’s owner. But he’s not leaving. But if the owner doesn’t come out, I plan to take him with me”. The Mardin Fire Brigade rescued five people and two cats from the wreckage of the Akan Apartment Building in Nurdagi in Gaziantep province six days after devastating earthquakes struck southeastern Türkiye and northern Syria. The team, which delivered the other cat to its owner, undertook the care and feeding of Enkaz. As the disaster enters its 11th day, the death toll in Türkiye stands at 36,187 as of midday on February 16, making it the deadliest disaster in the country in a century.

I love cats, absolutely adore them, and this is a great story. Those people are doing such sad and stressful work, and this little guy is giving them something to smile about, raising their spirits. Well done, that cat.
