I’m just so curious WHY she wanted to play the Super Bowl.

she didn’t get paid. she apparently had no music or tour to promote.

My guess is that she has scrapped multiple pieces or versions of the album. Back in 2018-2019 she said she planned to do a reggae album followed by dance hall right after that (prob 1 year difference?) then maybe the pandemic made her change her mind about it, then pregnancy, etc.

She also took some time to finally come up with Anti because first it was FourFiveSeconds, BBHMM, American Oxygen and there's like a whole scrapped Kanye produced album, not to mention the sessions they had to finally decide what stayed. That Rihanna vault just wont let up.

This seems like the best summation. I remember she was saying that she'd already started working on new material just after Anti had been released. Then, yes, in 2018 we were told she was working on a double album of experimental reggae on one disc and commercial pop on the other. Then just as the year was ending, a record label official said her album was 100% coming out in 2019. When January 1, 2020 arrived and there was no sign of it, it was clear that it had all been scrapped and we should no longer listen to anything anyone says. Her repeated teasing in the years since then only to result in absolutely nothing makes you wonder how much stuff has stopped and started. I get why she wanted a break from music because yes, it was nothing but trouble trying to get Anti released. The initial singles weren't taking off as planned and then Kanye was dropped from the project and the album clearly had to be re-worked. By the time she eventually got it put out, she maybe thought this music business was more bother than it's worth. But if she doesn't want to do this anymore, she really shouldn't speak on it at all until the album is on the brink of being ready. There are many other artists who have taken similar hiatuses but the difference is, they've been silent on music in all this time, but Rihanna continues to dangle this carrot in front of her fans only to keep on disappointing them, which is outrageous at this point. She could release all the unreleased songs as a compilation album (not a proper studio release, just a casual compilation release). Her fans deserve it after all they've gone through.

Let's be real, the only thing that could cause Rihanna to make music her top priority again is if Fenty Beauty goes under and that shows no sign of happening. Supporting their fave's venture into make up was a blessing and a curse for the Navy. They've ensured she'll be rich for the rest of her life but not in a way that benefits them in the way they'd like.

she talked about new music many times

This September interview was right around the time she would have gotten pregnant. I feel like she did mean to release an album but ended up having her son. And I also feel like she would have released something now had she not been pregnant again. Which is understandable, because it would be pretty weird having a "hey I have to abort our child because I have an album to put out" conversation with your significant other.

Imagine if she had made a dance hall album and released it in 2020 when it was at peak popularity. It probably would have done really well.

Very well said. What doesn't make sense though is that the pandemic was the perfect opportunity for pop artists to release albums without the expectation of doing an exhausting tour. Miley, Nick, Katy, Taylor all released albums with NO tour even being attempted. If anything, 2020-2021 was a golden opportunity for popstars to further their career without the most dreaded part.

Rihanna not only ignored that opportunity, but she won't even provide an honest update to her fan base. To add insult to injury, she gives curt answers and gets annoyed.

The other thing is -- Rihanna is a pop veteran and completed her original record contract requirement. Her extended hiatus means she certainly isn't going to be pressured to release music when she doesn't want to.

She can run her music career on her own terms.. why doesn't she? Drop us a random single like Cardi B, Britney, others do. Doesn't mean you have to promote it or follow-up with an album. Hell, there's probably enough unused demos with Rih's vocals to make an entire artist's career.

Clearly she's not willing to retire, but she won't even do the bare minimum to maintain her celebrity status as a musician.

The break between Unapologetic and Anti seemed forever, especially since she was churning out new records EVERY SINGLE YEAR from her debut all the way to Unapologetic. This break has seemed even longer, but almost so long that I'm not getting desperate for new music. Her catalog is large enough and still fresh enough to entertain for another few years.

I agree with the above that the pandemic would've been the perfect time to release a new record.

I wish she would just go ahead and pull a Chemtrails/Blue Banisters and just release the new album for fans enjoyment and not both with much promotion, outside maybe 1-2 solid videos and a couple of televised performances. Then, when she's ready in a couple more years, she can release another album with accompanying tour and promo.
