My issue is with these so-called allies that just troll and mock otherwise well-intentioned people. It's all about an ego stroke for them, and not actually converting supporters or advocating for the trans community. They cosplay trans anger and then get to call themselves a good person when all they did was throw more gas on the fire... there are examples of that behaviour in this very thread, actually

No one could possibly care about every cause under the sun - not even the terminally online - much less "educate and advocate for" them. That's why it's important to win over allies by making them feel good about fighting for your cause alongside you - as volunteers as opposed to subordinates. Y'all are doing the exact opposite of that by making them walk on eggshells around you at all times.

@PartySickIf I had replied to you this is what I would write (sry my English is so messy ). You don’t get people to fight for your cause by casting aside allies you don’t consider dedicated enough by your standards. Pick your fights carefully. Police? Sure. People who are already supporting LGBT causes even if it’s not their primary concern? Think about whether it’s worth alienating them.

I just wanna mention that the game features a trans character (although briefly) and gender isn't fixed to your appearance/voice when you're creating a character. So the game doesn't exactly scream "transfobic" on its own accord.

Obviously that doesnt change anything about Rowling, but it should be mentioned.

There are queer characters throughout the game - yesterday I saved an older witch from dark wizards while she was doing research in the woods, and afterward she casually mentioned her wife while talking to me

The game in itself is very diverse though in terms of gender identity and race, featuring a lot of different kinds of people including a trans character and allowing you to create non binary characters. I don't think JK had much to do with this game, and I'm pretty sure the 100s of staff working on it don't share the same views as these two people.

Yes that's my point. The people who are indifferent, not already allies, are gonna be turned away and create some resentment for the attitude people hold about the game. This isn't as much about real allies as it is about people who are being exposed to trans thoughts for the first time.

I beg whoever is hell bent on destroying this game and ruining it for longtime fans to go outside and touch grass. 
Like Rowling’s TERF a$$ geared the story TOWARDS those who felt alienation in the real world. PLENTY of LMNOP’s & BiPOC are still playing the game, let them live. Like why do y’all have to find every excuse to bark at the already disenfranchised individuals who have a longtime attachment to this IP. 
I also know multiple trans friends who still love this game so in all honesty? I see a lot of the policing of this video game coming from chronically online twitter users and they’re 9 times out of 10 white and trying to call the game racist now as well? Like what? Baby log off.

While I don't think it's productive to tell people not to buy and play the game, I understand the sentiment completely. I appreciate the people pointing out that there isn't really such a thing as ethical consumption, but it kinda misses the point with this specific case. Rowling is actively gauging the success of this game to infer the general public's acceptance of her gender critical activism, even if that's not how the public sees their consumption. The game could literally make her $0, and I'd still encourage people not to buy or play it. It's not the financial power that this game is giving her, its the social power, the motivation. Apple and Walmart and Amazon don't exactly equate their success with the public's acceptance of their morals and political views.

(Twitter is another case where its success, or rather it's failure, is indicating to Musk his popularity. But it gets more complicated where, as a social media platform, its used to spread misinformation and disinformation, and there is a moral imperative to fight against that, while also being a moral imperative to actively boycott Twitter because of Musk. Creating this dissonance where people either accept "Can't use twitter" "must use twitter to fight bad faith actors" or "no such thing as ethical consumption so doesn't matter if I use it or not")

Rowling is the biggest face of transphobia currently, so seeing people consuming her IP can be rather traumatizing to trans people, because much like Rowling, it appears as support, or at least complacence, of her personal views. It appears the game was always going to be a success, but it's not the general public playing the game that's the most traumatizing, it's those within the community playing it that hurts the most. So I understand the hostile, defensive, and emotional response and pleas to not play the game. It's a trauma response (or a white-knight response to others' trauma). It's not supposed to be productive. Which is unfortunate because it will only alienate potential allies who are on the other end of that response.

For me it's not even about boycotting anymore. She just took a massive dump on her own franchise and I just don't care about it any longer.

The game looks cool though
