And the slander piece and controversy had the opposite effect in 2019, he rocketed to popularity unseen since his death. He was a very savvy business man and despite racking up personal debts in the hundreds of millions, his actual estate owns/owned a huge amount of shares and rights to major labels and properties, like Neverland Ranch. He had over half a billion dollars in assets at the time of his death and those have mostly appreciated in value. There's a reason he's factually the biggest entertainer in history. Even 14 years after his death he's hitting the list of the highest paid celebrities, living or dead.
