Charmz 4,164
So… Beyoncé winning in the dance category has created a lot of discussion in the DJ community. Here’s an example from Tommie Sunshine: https://www.instagram.com/p/CoTCICXvIwA/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= discuss! LilyLark 10,104
Eh, I think the issue is the Grammys has always had very confusing rules. Apparently, Twigs was deemed ineligible for the electronic/dance category for Mary Magdalene which is....more in that field than anything Bey, Gaga, Madonna, etc. have done. If anything, the electronic/dance category should be more inclusive....there are a lot of albums that are deemed ineligible that defn. should fit in that category. DavidLuis198 1,146
That's a complicated topic... it's unfair that huge popstar are competing (and of course, winning) a category where the smaller artists of the dance scene are too, cause they stand virtually no chance. But at the same time, it's terrible that black artists always get nominated in the urban / hip-hop / R&B categories even if their music aren't this genre, like, BREAK MY SOUL, where else could it be nominated than in the dance category? I don't know how to write in english

I agree! The DJ’s are pressed tonight, I think what I can read between the lines is that Beyoncé isn’t the only one making amazing dance music. Some of the best Dance Music is made by people who will never ever get nominated because the Grammy’s prioritize pop star winners. alsemanche 93,863
I mean... its a dance album so I dont see the issue. Especially when big names have won dance categories before, including Gaga. Soft, soothing, and succulent

I see some DJ’s argue that they run sets at clubs full time and never once heard or played Break My Soul. Of course, I’m sure the gay clubs did? I don’t visit clubs so idk. There is also a lot of discussion about payola. Beyoncé definitely contributes to music/entertainment in a meaningful way, but the argument is so do many other artists. So, why always Beyoncé (or insert some mega famous artist)? Commercial success is driven by factual data - streams, sales, etc. from my POV, it’s a dance record and it’s cool she won. But I do understand the concern for hard working dance artists who are famous underground in clubs getting no recognition when a big pop star is nominated in their main category. should the Grammys start explaining their reasoning when presenting the award for the big categories? I think this is a fair solution. Always & Forever, 🧚🏻♂️🦉CHARMZ🦉🧚🏻♂️
ImMatt 1,778
Interesting...not sure if I agree or disagree with him but Interesting to note he gave Gaga huge praise back in 2010 for making dance music mainstream: "[Gaga] has done so much for making dance music mainstream. I'm sorry, but there wouldn't be a David Guetta top 10 hit ... there wouldn't be this Black Eyed Peas record, if it wasn't for The Fame. The influence of that record is epic, and we are hearing talking about all of this because of that."" https://www.mtv.com/news/ubvmq1/lady-gaga-has-made-dance-music-mainstream-dj-tommie-sunshine-says
Ziggy 11,865
I’m sorry but I really don’t wanna hear this from a white DJ. Even though he’s a DJ and great at it, at the end of the day, this dude was more than happy to give Gaga flowers back in the day for mainstreaming dance and now has a problem when “some billionaire lady walks in” and hires the talent or puts it up even though she did the same thing for ballroom and house? Like there’s *history* in Renaissance and it has generated discussion around that history. That’s not nothing and while it isn’t something I think means she needs to win best dance album, going on his criteria for handing out flowers…well, hand em out lmao also dude is flat wrong when he said no dj would play those songs in a set. Maybe in straight clubs but in queer clubs? I heard honey Dijon herself play Heated in a house set and that’s not even her song she worked on. If he’s really mad about pop stars coming in, sure. That’s a real problem and actually annoying. They literally only aired the award this time to have Beyoncé’s win happen live m. That’s a bit rude to the others in the genre. If the problem is Beyoncé specifically coming in, though, then I’m a little more skeptical bc arguably Beyoncé’s album is more full dance than even Gaga did when she was at her apex. Like TF and TFM especially are more europop than anything else.

I think this is a fair solution. See my thing is this weird erasure of queer clubs in this discourse he’s having because top down renaissance was in every single set. Hell, there have been Renaissance specific NIGHTS and they routinely sell out. So to say that it doesn’t get played in clubs is just flat out wrong and honestly I’ll go for it and say queer erasure. Every queer club in Chicago plays Renaissance and the DJs too. Chicago—the home of house music. Like sorry but straight clubs have some pretty **** sets and don’t play a lot of great queer dance music lmao you play to your crowd. If your crowd are straights then the ultra gay Beyoncé album probably won’t be it regardless of quality.
