My choice is to stay true to myself and my (Russian Orthodox) religion,” Provorov said after the game in explaining his decision to sit out warmups. I think this idea that you can cite religion as a reason to be hateful against something people can't change about themselves is ridiculous. What's next are people gonna cite religion to be racist.. Um, going out of your way to skip a game (literally your job) because pride colors were printed on the jersey for that game is definitely homophobic. I do not agree with his choice or his stance on it (especially as someone who does not believe in god), since I am a member of the LGBT community. But humans are complex and have a story behind them that often explains much more than jumping to the conclusion that paints them in the worst light. He grew up in Russia. This kind of stance is not an unpopular there. They are instilled in him. He needs to be educated, rather than immediately being labeled as a homophobic bigot and have calls for his contract to end because he doesn't support gay pride. It's my understanding that when something like this happens, the NHL and most sports organizations go through the effort to educate the players. He's been living in the U.S for 12 years now . I can understand if it was someone coming straight out of Russia. But not in the case of this guy. He's been living in the U.S since the age of 14. The man isn't trying to even educate himself. Instead he prides himself on being "true to himself" even if it means discriminatory. So you shouldn't give too much benefit of the doubt to people who refuse to change their ways. And why is Russian society homophobic in the first place? It's because of grown men like him who use religion as a justification to reject LGBT people. The meaning of homophobia is "irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or gay people."
